Meteor piston, is yours a 10mm pin? Mine is an early saw with no decompression button but it is a 12mm pin. Double check it with the caliper before you commit.
Just spotted your correction. Yep. I meant piston not cylinder!
Has anyone any experience of Hyway parts (Taiwan made I think)? I am struggling to find anyone in the UK that sells a meteor kit with the 10mm gudgeon pin. I have been working at cleaning the cylinder up today and it looks pretty good now. A little more time and it could be ok. There is a seller on ebay that sells a Hyway piston for the 044, but I am wondering if I bite the bullet and just buy a meteor and cylinder kit from the US?
Is it worth going the whole hog on this and replacing the crank gasket as well? Reading around, a leak here could cause the failure above and I am not sure how to test it? Other causes can be rectified when the cylinder is back on it.

How often do you use a the saw?
Is the cost of the parts and P&P worth less than the machine?
Can you get/hire a saw for when you need one?
These are a few questions to be asked and considered.
Looking at the pictures it will be a full rebuild to make sure there is no other damaged or metal swarf what will make a repair pointless.

Weekend use but often a full days once I get started. Tree and hedge work. I want to try and repair it to be honest - if nothing else to learn how to do so.
We have 12 acres so hire/electric and even battery are all out in my opinion. There are a lot of neglected hedges and trees.

Been there.
Screwfix do a good one. Mine gets used about 4 times a year, then it is a full day graft for it.
The fun is in the learning.
if you're going to rebuild you might as well do the crank bearings and seals at the same time, that way you're starting with a fresh bill of health. In my opinion, if you're going for bearings, better go go for those with steel cages and not plastic like the original.

I bought the cheapest piston on ebay for my 044, cost about £6.50 and it's run well for nearly 2 years now. My plan was to treat it to a barrel and piston if it didn't work out but it saved me the trouble by running perfectly. I picked a saw up today from Gumtree, MS460 to have a look at and tinker with. I had the exhaust off and the piston looks clean, there's a spark but no action so I will take the carb off and see what is going on inside. It needs some new plastics though so I'll see about some from China once it's running.

I have one of these 'MS460'
I got mine new along with a 192T which is what I used mostly. The 460 is a beast and chews through some fuel in anger, but does chop wood nicely
. Had my 192t pinched when got broken into and replaced it with a 193t 'same but different'. When I get some 'freer' time have to do some tree removing from my neighbours property, plenty of mulch from that exercise

The Ms460 I bought looked like a do upper. I put a new plug in it first and tried pulling it over and got a spark. Took the carb off and cleaned it out and it runs with a bit of coaxing so I'll order some plastics and see how it goes with a bit of carb adjustment.

That's nasty.
An update - piston and seal kit came today. So I started to dismantle to seperate the crankshaft.
In a stupid moment i just jammed the flywheel to remove the clutch. Guess what.... broke a fin. I knew i shouldnt do it as i went to do it. I dont know why i didnt stop! Ordered a secondhand flywheel from ebay. I am too far into this now not to get it running again!!
