A bit of early morning induction heater action.
The fuel pick up and return boss is a melt fit to the tank. It had to come off as the rubber pipes and steel stubs have rotted away.
The workshop stinks now.

I did consider it but I didn't fancy the idea of heating metal to melt plastic that was used to contain petrol and then leaving the building.

I cleaned out the tank, then left it sitting for a day with safety clean in it, then washed it out again, then left it on the safety clean tank with the heat on, gave it a final swill and then left it standing for 2 days. I'm sure it would have been fine, and there haven't been any issues, but I know I would have been sat at home watching the cameras.

They were still a bit twitchy about the H&S aspects so the long-term fix was to sub the whole job out.

To someone with less of a concern about the H&S aspects?

I think they preferred to give the job to an outfit (still UK based) who were experienced with this sort of work rather than have our own guys trained to do it safely. The same logic was behind getting rid of all the machine tools from the R&D lab and sub the work out rather than put somebody qualified in charge of them. It wasn't a decision I particularly agreed with, but way above my pay grade.

In a funny turn of events though, fast forward a few years and the subcontractor ended up with us as 70% of our business, owner wanted to retire so we've just finalised a deal to buy them outright. Will be interesting to see how that pans out.
