Today I acquired...........

Today I was handed possibly the most pointless adjustable spanners I've come across in my line of work however they will do just fine in my tool box at home! Who needs a 31/42mm opening spanner thats so short it couldnt possibly be used to actually undo a nut/bot that size!

I also took delivery of some new welding gloves along with a selection of general purpose ones to try out/use.View attachment 499866

I use those adjustable at work.
Fire extinguisher heads.
Air sampling systems.
Purging systems.
They are goo when used for what they are designed for,.

I work for the railways fixing signalling and points. When I need to undo nuts that size theyre normally tightened previously by someone with a pair of stilsons and a hammer! These wouldnt even stand a chance!

Also works well for pumping up suspension on a MG F hydrostatic suspension

I thought it looked like the one that was on sale at Tatton Park last weekend, marked as such. £75 for that one. I looked because I wondered if it would do the suspension on the Morris 1300 sitting in the garage - it looks a bit low, but it might just be all the stuff that's in it. Didn't buy it, but it might appear again.

I have pumped up hydrolastic suspension with a home made gadget made from a brake master cylinder. It worked ok ish, but the proper method is to evacuate the entire system first to remove as much air as possible, then let the resulting vacuum pull in as much fluid as it needs, then add a little more to pressurise it.

I guess the hand pump thing would work, but you’d always have some air present in the system which would give it a softer ride, and probably a lower ride hight too.

You really need to get the air out if you can…

And on the right what came in the mail today
Harris 43-2 and 73-2 cutting torch

The newest one is pretty low quality compared to the old one

I need to empty it out, free off the brakes (again) and get it out of the garage to give it a proper assessment. It's been in the garage for some time, only coming out for MOTs for a while and not even that for six or seven years, so I'm a bit surprised that it would suddenly drop, and maybe it hasn't. One of the tyres is a bit low. It needs to come out to see it properly, but that's something I keep not getting around to.

Separately, I've been given an office cupboard for the shed, but I've got an issue with so much stuff crammed in there that it's difficult to get it in place. I am getting rid of a few old kitchen cupboards to get it in place as it's generally better, but it's a lot of fiddling to get the old stuff out and the new stuff in. It might force me to get rid of some stuff, though, so that's a good thing.

So it seems. I guess in my world of work it's literally the last tool I'd need. I need longer spanners not shorter!

As said, great for plumbing. Also good when you've cracked a bolt off with a big spanner but it's still too tight to unscrew by hand. A short spanner like that is a lot quicker and easier to swing than a long one.

Just having a look at mines.
Older one has bigger head, nice castings you can see were gases go through to read the tip
Lever is held in place by a stainless steel screw and it has a little detent to avoid it to fold forward when not needed.
Stainless plunger valve for the cutting oxygen.
The connection nut is smooth, bigger and easier to tighten and loosen.
The handle has longer threads on the stainless portion too
Newer one has a very simple triangular shapeD casting for the head
The lever pivots on a cotter pin, oxygen valve is made out of brass, no detent so the thing flies forward when you leave the lever etc etc
It feels almost like a toy and despite that the older one is still lighter and nicer to held.
And it says HARRIS MADE IN THE USA
new one says made by -The Harris Product Group-
I've seen better looking clones on AliExpress and I've said everything
I wasn't expecting that honestly because we have Italy line torches at work, they are Frover torches essentially made by Harris in Poland, far better than this thing.
I'm sad to say that because I'm a fan of their products but this thing did NOT satisfied my expectations

Yep I have victor made in USA one of the last lot that got bought into the UK it's a beautiful thing. I keep it for best use when I need to do a decent bit of cutting.

Those adjustables might be great for plastic fittings in harder to reach places
