Fantastic nice! It's slightly grimy but specialist R&D workshops are the ideal balance of low workload and high operator skill to perfectly preserve machines.

I recommissioned and built a new ER11 spindle for one a few years ago for a friend who does lots of horology, and really enjoy using them.

A small CNC would make more sense, but there's something almost meditative about running a well set up pantograph.

It's a heart bar horseshoe to support a prolapsed frog.
I knew what it was but had to Google the name for it. Not owned a horse for nearly 30 years.

They are the best! My mum had the Major, bought in about 1970 and also had the mincer, the blender and the coffee grinder that went with it. I had to make a small repair when the dough hook shaft broke off up inside and the broken bit was stuck behind the ring clip in about 1985 and that's all. I think my brother still has it!

It's a heartbar shoe.
Imaginatively named as it's basically a heart shaped bar across the rear of a normal shoe.

That one looks fairly modern, 2000 on
Hard to tell from the photo but it looks like it has been cut from plate.
Looks unused. They are fairly time-consuming to make so unlikely a farrier has made it and not used it so I would expect it is a machine made, stock shoe.
However, they are a very common 'test piece' for apprentices to make and also made in competitions so probably plenty of unused ones around.
Test/training ones would be fire-welded, normally through the center of the heart plate so you could clean it up and look for weld edges.
The bars/inserts are also made/sold separately so would be welded (usually electrically) around each heal of a normal shoe.
Often given as gifts, I get asked for them fairly regularly by people wanting to use them as table decorations for weddings and such and some of the guests normally take them home..
They are popular with people who make items from welding old shoes together and you'll often spot them as centerpieces within a sculpture or being used as handles on a fire pit etc.
Easy to make into a door knocker by fixing a hinge along the rear.

They can be used to support a prolapsed frog.
Although a frog prolapse is normally a symptom caused by something else, the shoe is effective for treating a large number of those causes.

The style has been in use as long as I can remember, still common to use them now. Modern machine made alternatives are still available cut from sheet, cast, forged, machined from aluminium, moulded from plastics and so on.
The flat type in the photo can be quite slippy on certain surfaces so the cast/forged types generally incorporate grooves for improved grip
They are not ideal for long term use or use in certain environmental conditions as they cover the relativity soft frog and it can rot.
They also have limited functionality and more effective treatment options exist although these are normally at a higher time/price cost so the regular type in the photo remains popular.
I commonly use a 3d printed pad to create the heart shape support and this is inserted under a normal shoe.
Provides more dynamic support and allows some breathability to the frog.

Yes,
Quite a few actually.
They have some good advantages, mainly the ability to provide precise custom-fit as I can trace around the foot using a graphics tablet. It's also easy to make changes sat on the sofa.
Parts range from inserts to cover a hole/wound to pads (as photo above) that are held in place by a normal shoe, upto complete shoes that are glued on.

Obviously the use is limited, partially by the materials available but mainly the extended print times . I do print 'stock' if the printer is not doing anything else.
But if I wanted a heartbar shoe like in advarks photo I could make a lot of those in an hour using a plasma cutter and a welder but, even running 2 printers, could only make 2 a day...

Laser digital level. Appears accurate, has lasers. The buttons protrude so I have stuck some foam over the power to stop it turning on accidently.
It would be better if it had a v groove on one of the sides for round items. I'll be trying it on round non magnetic stainless posts tomorrow..
