Found on the foot path, walking back from the pub last night.

Excellent device, used for destroying rubber boots on track rod ends you really wanted to re-use.

Mine gets used these days to persuade aluminium wiper arms to come off splined steel spindles after nearly 30 yrs in the bottom drawer, where it got chucked after another damaged boot incident.

... sounds somehow different from your data ...

Once upon a time, we used to have "lighting up time", which was the time car headlights should be turned on. I think it was half an hour before sunset.

The HC used to say you could drive on sidelights in a well-lit area. I once got reported by a Plod for driving my Simca van 100 yards down the local High Street (the widest one in England) on sidelights. If that street wasn't 'well-lit' I'd (still) like to know what would qualify. Got a caution - that said, these days I am pretty anal about making sure the car lights are on.

Hah. Coming back from the south coast, then Lunnon, in an Escort van, I noticed the alternator light came on at the start of the M1. I merrily continued on my way on sidelights only, to preserve the battery. That section of the M1 was the most utterly lit-up road in the country but it was surprising the number of eejits on the other carriageway flashed me, for not having headlights on. Jeex, it was like daylight on the carriageway.

I get annoyed when walking home from the pub at how many cars driving towards me have their main beams on, often in the area that has street lighting. I resist the temptation to make rude gestures (a mate once did that, and the car stopped for him and the driver to have a "frank exchange of views") but theatrically cover my eyes and mouth stuff at them. After all, I don't have lights when I'm walking, and I can see perfectly well, so modern dipped beams should be plenty. I'm on the footpath, I should add.

I blame auto-dipping headlamps, probably more than ignorant drivers, though I may be being too charitable.
