There are so many good ones out there in the £30 - £50 range (inc offers) these days, I think we're spoiled for choice. If you move slightly above that range, there are some really good onesHaving said that, I'm no whisky snob and I'll give any whisky chance

I picked up a bottle of this last year when I was on Shetland:
It's a Speyside single malt that's "overwintered" on Unst, and I fell madly in love with it at my first tasting. I'm not one for all that poncey tasting notes nonsense, but it was sweet and smooth, not a trace of harsh after taste, and even my OH claimed it as being most agreeable
. £44 from Amazon, and if the lighter, single paler malts are your thing, and in truth I'm not a fan of the Lagavulins and Laphroaigs, give it a try. For me, itwithout a doubt the nicest whisky I've ever tasted I'm also a great dan of Nevis Dew blended, from the Nevis distillery at Fort William. Again, it's a lighter whisky, and I much prefer it to the likes of the more "mainstream" blends such as Johhnie Walker and Bells.

, and had another great night. They have a stunning selection of whiskies on sale, and in conversation with a whisky lover, I was advised which ones to try. Can't remember the exact one, but I asked for a shot of a 25 year old malt that he recommended. I proffered a £20 note and the barman said "That's £18 please."
. I remember staring alternately at the whisky and my £2 change and thinking "I hope this is good" and "God forbid if OH ever finds out about this..." (She still reminds me from time to time that I made her buy her own engagement ring
).
. Couldn't buy a bottle as they didn't have a shop or visitor's centre, so I called in at Glenlivet, (and had to use full diff locks in my old 8x4 hiab truck to get through the snow), bought a couple of bottles of their finest, and was given an impromptu tour of the distillery because they were so quiet
I really need to get up to visit a couple of the distilleries and do a tour or two - and relieve them of a sample or six!
