Today I acquired...........

It's an Amolco bench-top machine - designed to be fitted to a Myford lathe in place of the tailstock. I wouldn't fancy lifting it into place, it weighs a fair bit ]. Mine has the rare base and I bought it 'down sarf' and with the help of Members here [great place this ] got it home.
There were posts about it at the time. Here it is after I tidied it up and fitted a NVR switch

The base on mine is slightly bent, I assume it's supposed to be flat?

Any chance you can confirm - and perhaps 'The Collective' cab advise how best to flatten it out again if needs be?

Yeah mine is flat, bolted it to a piece of wood so it’ll sit in the bench vice. It has a corner missing off the top jaw which I made the seller aware of when I put my £5 offer in on it but he said it designed like that must be the only one like that. Doesn’t affect it’s use and happy with it for the price.

This was the cheapest one I found but they went right upto £50 for some and then everything inbetween price wise.

A lovely old catalogue from a long-since vanished manufacturer.

I bought a file a while ago, Eagle on Globe brand. The file is enormous, 14” long! I couldn’t find any info on it, but then this appeared for sale so I snapped it up. I love these early sales catalogues.

Goodness, how my pulse did quicken seeing history from my beloved home town .

Similarly, I can find very little info about them, save for one reference that they were based in The Wicker?? (Trivia alert: when you look at the Wicker Arches on google street view, there are many round marks visible, which my dear old Dad always maintained were caused by the guns of the German bombers during the Sheffield Blitz in WW2. Might be true, might not, but either way the Germans would have been very close to there when they were after bombing the big drop hammers that were knocking out crankshafts for Merlin engines. IIRC, it was a 10 ton drop stamp that was in either Firth Browns, as was, or what’s now Sheffield Forgemasters, just off Attercliffe Common.)

The photo of the “New Works” on Broughton Lane is another mystery, but that area has changed enormously in my lifetime alone. When I first heard the siren call of the demon drink, 35+ years since, me and our kid used to regularly frequent the east end of Sheffield, and in those days, the Broughton Lane area of Attercliffe Common was predominantly Asian, as in Indian and Pakistani. A lot of the shops were the proverbial “corner shop”, and for someone who grew up eating plain, albeit healthy food such as meat and tatie pie EVERY Saturday for tea, roast beef and Yorkshire puddings for Sunday dinner, leftovers for tea on Monday, and bread and dripping every day for snap at work, the smell of curry in the area was as intoxicating to me as the Stones, Wards, and Tetleys that we used to imbibe of .

Many, many fond memories come back to me when I get back there, and a delivery to any engineering concerns is always a great treat for this exiled Steel City boy.

This evening I acquired a easy weekend.
Empty house.
No planned jobs, just pottering on small jobs.


But now I have acquired a busy weekend.

I did the duty of a good TYA and loaded the tumble dryer. Looking up the chip board loft boards were wet and looking very unsafe.

A fair bit of loft space stuff ahs plummeted to the floor.

I now have to tidy it all up.

Oh bother.
