I had a set of weights from when my dad ran a grocers shop, they had holes in the bottom filled with lead stamped with a seal which I assume was for calibration?.

Yes that is what the lead and seal are for.
The weights would be machined to a size and tolerance. Then lead added until it reached the stamped weight.

In the 70's the scrap man would melt the lead out. So if you see any old weights with a hole, that's were the lead was.

In 1975 The Royal Mail changes to metric measures for postal tariffs. That would have meant the issue of a set of new metric weights for the old brass & wood letter balance scales , accurate digitals one didn't replace them for quite a few years IIRC.

Anne our local ex PO & retired shop owner still has her old lamppost style brass & wood PO letter balance and weight set ( Made in Germany ) .. She had to send the replacement digital scales back when they became obsolete and when she finally shut up shop 6 or so yrs ago she also returned the post office's automated label printing & weighing machine .

I think there would have also been an annual check done by a person from the local authorities weights & measures department.

Thank you for that.
I had a set of GPO weights, German again. But this set had the crown stamp and "GPO" and what I guessed to be a serial number.

I can not see much on this set, the stamping is faint and some have varnish, or similar, on them.
That varnish will be removed.

The red doored locker was free from work (missing the locks) and the bits of black tube were in the scrap bin so saved them as I envisage them being incorporated into the feet of a table.
The rest was from our local homebase which is closing so has a sale on everything. Various discounts from 10% upwards, the reciprocating saw was 15 or 20% off and as I have been toying with the idea for a while I decided to bite the bullet.

My BOC branded optrel packed in a few weeks ago and I replaced it with a vega view decent thing but costly, well for occasional use. Couple of batteries in this and it works ok, but the gubbins that goes on the head is not working as it should mask droops too low and doesn't go up enough. Seems over complicated for what it does, tried messing about with it but can't figure it out. Any pointers?

Could you swap over the headgear from your old BOC/optrel mask?

The weights & measures people would do a check & stamp the lead in the weights with official seal. They could also adjust the weights there. My father also ran a grocers & I remember Weights & Measures coming round checking & certifying all the weights & checking the scales I think it was yearly, but could be wrong.

Looks like an older speedglass 9002 series or similar, was a common problem the headgear dropping low. I'm sure people put star washers or split washers on the pivot points to grab a bit tighter

Never had a problem with mine, is the "down position bit" (don't know it's proper name) located on the lug on the helmet correctly ?

I can post a pic if it'll help.

Got some unistrust to refit my shelving out in the garage

I like your set up .
All you need now is some strong non static curtaining & running rails 4 inches in front of the shelves so that when you start grinding etc and producing dust they will keep it off the gears stored on the shelves, as well as hiding things away from unwanted prying eyes who may accidently get a peek into your man cupboard .

The top shelf is 600mm deep and the lower ones are 450mm deep so the plastic drop sheets can be hung up if we are doing heavy sanding or grinding and the front doors are rarely open now as i put in a side door just to stop the view.

Thanks to @skotl for the heads up on a Rapidor, and while I was there I grabbed a pillar drill that was worth a punt. I believe its a Grimston Electriska, not checked the model number. All I know is that its a heavy lump!

You want to go with kerosene/heating oil, next time. It'll work out cheaper than buying those containers of paraffin.
