You want to go with kerosene/heating oil, next time. It'll work out cheaper than buying those containers of paraffin.

I've been using the water based concentrate from Machine Mart, you dilute it down, usually 1:10, works out quite reasonable and works well

I tried the machine mart one and again was not impressed compared to paraffin. I have heard ther is a good one based on orange oil. Yes that paraffin was expensive as I bought it from B&Q but no doubt could have bought something cheaper. Worst part of using paraffin is the strong smell.

Blades Adze.
Terrible restored. The shaft is original, there is the name stamped on the lower end of the handle. I will try to save that in the restoration. The head is pitted and some one has taken a grinder to the edge.

Almost a set of weights, one missing.
The weights were in one shop and the base was next door.
So they are now together.

But wait there is more.

Well, about from the stuff for Mrs TYA and Mini Me, the rest is not as it seamed.

The weights, yes they are German, HÄFNER is or was the maker.
But, apart from the addition I added to replace the missing one, are made up from 2 different sets.

The wooden holder does have a GPO stamp on it, but with what I found out on the Adze I have my doubts.

It drank wax, like I drink coffee. The weights did buff up. But one looks dull.

Still nice and will be useful.



The Adze.
Yes the head is a Blade made unit, approx. 1942.
But the shaft is a replacement, badly made and with a split were the head was forcibly wedged in place.
Spear & Jackson, who took over Blades, have replied that the head would never be wedged when new, also it would have about 3/8 or 10mm of shaft proud of the head. Simply it self wedges itself, like a pick axe.
They shaft would only bean hot branded and sanded smooth, never stamped.

So a puppy. But the head is in a de-rusting tank and the steel is good. It will rise again.

This is what I acquired on Friday and yesterday.



Shop damaged tub of hand cleaner. Turns out a customer had tried to open it to see what it felt like. So it was left outside and I asked if I could have it.



Same place as the hand cleaner, 800kg of assorted packaging timber. That there is a bundle safely stowed at a friends garage.



Un named 1/4 drive ratchet with a 4BA socket. It was rusted on, but a quick tap with a hammer and punch it was off.



Marples Mitre clamp, £5 from a local second hand shop.



Another vice, likes like it was made by "Boom". This was given to me as it does not work.


Finally.
Record Vice stand.
This was not acquired today, but returned to me yesterday.
I acquired it ages ago, but it was lent out, via Men In Shed and was lost.

But I now have it back.

This is the right hand side of the helmet, there is the same lug on the left hand side of my helmet but no slotted piece to locate on it.



This is the parts in order that they go together, from the left... that first goes through the helmet head strap, then next comes the black piece with "R" on it, then comes the helmet shell, next is the metal spring washer with the outer edge touching the helmet shell and finally goes on the adjuster nut.

You adjust the nut on each side so there is just enough friction that the helmet stays up but when you nod your head it drops to the lower position, depending on which slot you engage the lug in sets how low or high the welding position is.

If you want more pics just ask.

Well what I have posted is the correct setup for a Speedglas 9002 helmet, what is it that you have got ? as from looking at the pic you posted earlier it sure looked like a 9002

Says 9002V on the back of the filter as for anything else I don't know, it has been suggested on here that that is what it is but I don't know it's history or anything about the speedglas range.

I bought a mini circular saw about 4 weeks ago, from Aldi currently still listed on their website, it’s one of those 18v battery jobs, cheap but not cheap at just under the £60 mark, I only bought it because I needed to cut some board and it was there on a Sunday, it comes with 3 blades,
Cutting wood sheets with the woodcutting blade didn’t work great, the blade doesn’t spin fast enough, it wanders too easily, and the battery doesn’t last long enough, I was tempted to take it back for a refund, chalking it down to experience, but in the last few weeks I have used it quite a bit, but with the supplied little diamond disc, it’s cut lots of fiberglass trims for my flat roof, and cleaning out mortar before fitting the lead work, and part cutting blocks and it’s currently being used to cut the recesses and drops to fit sockets, I got a nail gun from Aldi as a gift and it uses the same battery, so now works twice as long,

It’s not nearly as good as an angle grinder, especially a mains powered one, but it’s certainly been useful for me, even if not for what I bought it for, and being able to do the odd cut without sorting out a supply of electricity, up a ladder or on the flat roof has been useful.

Same used to be found with Screw Fix tools, e.g.. Power Devil range.
Tools were good for what they were, but the bits were rubbish.

I used to used them until the bits died, add the dead bit to scrap pile. Fit a decent bit and away we went.

The Power Devil Jig Saw was used to cut up 3 old cars of mine.

Agreed but the blades they sell seperatly (true for the ones I have tried at least) are pretty good

The Adze.


From the de-rusting tank, after being left in paint stripper to remove some varnish junk.



The Hammer end was dressed and re shaped. It didn't need much, just a bit burr removed.

The working end, what a ducking mess.
I had to grind it back, re-shape and re-grind the edge.

I then heated to red heat, quenched in old oil. The cleaned it back to allow me to see the colour move as I tempered the end to dark blue.

That Image is after I quenched it after tempering.



The Name and details highlighted in blue tinted bee's wax. The Head now is temporary finished in clear lacquer, until I sort the shaft out.

Oh yes. I have sharpened the cutting edge to be able to removes hairs on my arm.

Like the die grinders they had a while back, the grinders are great but the set of bits that come with them are absolutely awful. Putting the 1/8th shank ones in the 70,000rpm snap on grinder was funny though

Today I acquired quality ACME threading bits. The holder is 80 quid from MSC and the inserts 16 quid each from another place. I got the new holder for £20 and 6 inserts for £24 from ebay, so I'm very happy.

Today I got a replacement plastic plug for the oil-filling hole on my little Lidl compressor. Dopey here broke the original [don't ask ] and phoned the agents to enquire about buying a replacement, since the compressor was [not long] out of warranty.

If it'd been unobtainable I'd have turned one in the lathe, but a nice young lady by the name of Rachel said she'd check with the suppliers/service agents and phone me back, although it'd possibly take a day or two. As good as her word, she called and said that it was still 'get-able' and that they'd send one out FOC, since it wasn't worth raising an invoice for the amount involved. It arrived today!

So, full marks Lidl for customer service.

Today I acquired two cast iron bollards to stop the bar stewards who can't drive from repeatedly knocking down the dry stone wall at the start of our drive. Typically they are delivery drivers who try to take a sharp turn up hill out of our drive way, cant't make it in one and then back into the wall as the clutch is burning.

The bollards are about 1140mm long of which about 450 mm will be in the ground surrounded by a very large lump of concrete and rebar etc. so shouldn't budge much. I'm having the end of the drive tarmacked in a couple of weeks so getting them in now, I've had my eye on them for a while.
