Finally got the speaker upgrade I’ve always wanted from the Celestion Ditton 25s (little ones still have 12” bass units though) to a very nice pair of Ditton 662s. They were a bit tight at first but they’ve loosened up with a bit of exercise. Awesome detail and clarity with bass to die for!

Nice one, I've been looking out for a street/skipped Dyson stick type.
I have one which was converted to run on my Makita batteries but it's an early version, not an awful lot of grunt, later ones had more suction.

Cycling home from the shed I spotted a small metal cabinet on the side of the road, similar to some larger ones that I acquired a year or two back, in that lovely brown colour with a beige door. Wondering why it was there, I saw this:
so I cycled home, thinking about whether it would fit in the car, and when I got home I decided that it would not. So, I got some gloves, walked back the 0.3 miles to the thing, decided it was light enough to carry, so I carried it home. It wasn't especially heavy, true, but it was amazingly awkward. It's just slightly too large to comfortably carry, and my gloves didn't grip all that well, so I had to keep stopping to adjust my grip on the thing. Anyway, I got it home. When I went to make some temporary room in the shed for it, I had to move the lightweight trolley that I decided I wouldn't need and wasn't worth dragging all that way, partly because if the cabinet had been taken while I was getting myself together, it would look as if I've just taken my trolley for an evening walk. Should have taken it.
Anyway, got a free cabinet, so that's nice. I'll recover soon.

That's interesting. Do you know how it initiates the arc without HF or contact with the work? It doesn't look like a blowback torch.

I'm not entirely sure.
All the spec mentions is it's a Non-HF pilot arc, and the machine torch uses the same working bits as the hand torch, as there are videos of people transplanting the bits from a hand torch into just the machine torch housing.

I had the same problem when I "picked up" an old otterman bed frame for the gas struts. Not heavy just awkward and I knew about it by the time I got home!

Neither set is complete and some taps have the ends snapped but I can make them complete with other bits I’ve got.
They must be a fair age, it was a wife selling off her sadly passed away husband’s tools, she said these belonged to his father originally and were passed onto him.

Today I acquired confirmation of where the squeals were coming from
As expected the handbrake shoe retaining pins had pulled through the backing plate and things fell to pieces.
Stupid hateful design. To replace the backing plate (at £144+VAT per side) you have to strip down the hub which is a variety of special tools and hydraulic presses.
I think some washers and the welder are coming out... Sod pulling the hub apart.

I've had that happen on a few occasions, if you get some of these washers you can just hold them behind the original holes and the pins are normally long enough to reach through the plate and grab the washers.Today I acquired confirmation of where the squeals were coming from

Local LR garage has a full fixings kit for them for £11 as I'm missing one of the pins. I was going to make something like that washer now to sit behind the plate.

With those you put the pins through the backplate and the washer goes on the front with the spring, common on a lot of GM products as a repair

Wouldn't work with the factory L322 springs I without some modification because of the style of the pin.
I'm going to try just tacking it all back up and filling the holes with weld. Simplest solution because of course where the pin goes through the backing plate is recessed so a flat washer won't work.
Might find a bit of brass if I have any, or ali, to put behind it to act as a bit of a heat sink and something to stop the weld becoming uneven at the back. If I'm fancy I'll file a flat bar that can poke through to stop the weld filling the hole where the pin goes through.

I don't know if you will have much luck welding rusted tin foil thin backing plates!
I had same issue on a Merc S class. Pattern parts were available for once so I cut in half and welded in place. Job done, new plate in there and no need to remove/ renew rear wheel bearings etc as is normally the case if fitting complete VS cutting and welding on
Well that forced me to dig deeper. It seems the PT / IPT torches are one of the "industry standard" torch designs, this one created by Thermal Dynamics, now owned by ESAB. And yes, it is indeed a blowback torch, where the air/gas pressure operates a piston in the torch head. This moves the main electrode back from contact with the pilot arc shield, presumably being slow enough to allow the arc to become established as it breaks contact. There's a small fuse in the pilot arc wire and presumably the pilot current is limited by the controller or possibly just has a resistor to limit the current.

It's not immediately obvious from the outside of the torch or even from the exploded views used for identifying and ordering consumables that the internal torch "head" contains a piston. I guess these don't tend to wear out in the same way as the bits in the way of the arc. The Chinesium torches seem to have copied the concept but not the exact design.
