Mixed box of new fangled metric screws to try, whats wrong with a good old inch 8?

If you like inches, what size drill bit do you need for a clearance hole for a #8 screw? (Answer is 'obviously' 5/32"). For a 4 mm screw you need a 4 mm clearance hole. Okay, so a #8 screw is the basically same size as a 4 mm screw, but it's so much simpler with metric.

Old money sizes are right there on the box...

They are good screws for the money, I've used a few thousand myself, better than the torquefast screws with the torxdrive that toolstation stock.

I tend to drill the clearance hole 0.5mm undersize, stops the head pulling too far into soft timber but still pulls up tight without issues.

That is actually a thing, they are called Scrails, you fire them in with a nail gun but can unscrew them out.

I don't like them either. They only good ones are the extra deep throat ones (don't have any of those) and the reversible rack clamps that push outwards. i've got three of those up to 1.5m

Agreed. That's what I'd use if I could find one, for just that purpose.

Bit of a road trip today

I managed to lose 1 of the remote fobs for the Jag Ipace about 4 months ago. It's a lease car and if it goes back minus a fob there would be a big bill

JLR dealers wanted £1200 to supply and code a new fob, and there are no new ones in the country and they have no idea when stock is likely to arrive

Step in The Key Lab in Milton Keynes, they managed to find a second hand fob, code it to the car and cut a new key but still cost me £600

Apparently, it's not just coding the fob, they have to fit a new security module from JLR and then code both fobs to it



Then popped over to pickup these from @pressbrake1



Then back to Wales

2 days after you hand it back, you will find the other fob in a coat pocket . . .

Based on the experience of a colleague 25 yrs ago anyway

Get friendly with a local automotive locksmith. Ask them for advice in situations like this. 95% of the time if they are good they can get you a key or recode an existing used key to match for a fraction of the cost.

I know a highly skilled locksmith who has worked miracles for me and very cost effective.

I don't doubt it, I've given it as long as I can, have pulled the house, garage and cars apart to try and find it but nothing yet

Only consolation would be, The Key Lab guys will buy the missing fob off me if it turns up

Odd size for what I'm used but a good price and particular electrode so if I'll ever use them I'm fine
Vacpack obviously so with long shelf life , anyway much more long then I need.

And other five packages of E7018 vackpack too

Yes I understand. The guy I know has a pile of stuff. Including friends in Germany and Russia etc who he works with and send him stuff.

I recall actually one of the items was actually a JLR key programming device of sorts. My guy thought it wouldn't work but tried it and was surprised.

This guy really is a genius no kidding. I believe that alot of new lorries can lock out modules etc and would otherwise require a new one. He can re programme used modules himself. So much so that MB trucks get him in to fix their stuff as they have too long a waiting list to even get the parts never mind the cost and he does it cheaper for them too but not too cheap mind and he is just right.

So never say never. Find a good locksmith and bring him a bottle of whisky every Christmas that's what do! I have a few cars and he is crucial for certain aspects and where key fobs are NLA for older s classes he can reprogramme used fobs for me etc.

Maybe they think they are not going to sell them easily because of the sizes .
