A safe, don't need one, have no space for one either but there is a story behind why I had to have it



Years ago, my wife ran the office for a local taxi firm, this was their safe. Some of you may remember my BIL passed a few years ago, quite young and completely unexpected

My wife has been receiving counselling to try and cope with her loss and 1 thing the she was asked to do as part of her therapy was put her brother somewhere safe.

The owner of the taxi firm is downsizing and needed the safe gone which is why I now have it

i have one virtually identical. it has 4 mahogany drawers inside lined with green felt from early eighteen hundreds and came from yarm friarage and belonged to the chaloners who lived there for there silver in going to sell it it takes up 2 much room

New big angry grinder. I didn't want to buy new but after visiting so many used ones that were knackered, despite the sellers claims, I gave up and bought new. After starting the search sensibly, I needed a 9 inch grinder, I then started adding extras to the tick list of requirements including rotating rear handle and anti vibes and ended up with this.

Tried to use it yesterday on a job cutting through concrete only for it to trip the breaker in the garage on the circuit sockets. Managed to get a 16a to 13a lead so I can plug it into the socket, with a C type breaker, for the compressor. Worked perfectly but by then the heavens had opened up.

Helping out yesterday clearing out a abandoned sheds at the allotments I found theses gems in the muck.
Sadly most of the hand tools were shot and the wood was burnt. The metal was taken to the scrap yard.

A quick check showed 66.66% worked.

A new mantle had it working.

Two paraffin stoves were saved as well.

Found the stand as well.

The third stove was a bit tired.

Yesterday, clearing the old sheds out of the allotments we found a lot of stuff.
A lot was no use to us, but will be re homed.
Nearly all of the helpers found something they wanted. Or could use.

Floor Board Saw.

Mess Tins and modern fuel.

A gun of hot glue. That does not work.

Small Frisbees.

A thing.
Yes I have no idea what it is for.

My bit at saving the planet.

If I were you I'd get down to toolstation and get one of those wire cup wheels for a 5" grinder and run it across that. I bet it comes up lovely.

When looking at a surface plate I look at the edges first. Nice crisp edges usually means a nice plate even under the rust. Dinged or rounded edges not so good.

I'd stick that in EGBERT (the Electrolytic Gungey Bubbling Encrustation Removal Tank) with a few gallons of deionised water and washing soda, stick 12v and some Amps (about 5-15 Amps per square foot works well - I've seen a DC TIG used as power source for larger items - like complete truck cabs) through a sacrificial anode* for a few days - it'd take off the rust without touching sound metal** underneath, beats putting grooves and valleys in it with a wire brush... Damn sight less effort, too! Won't put any pitting back though, that'd be too much to ask.

*Iron, steel or for us Posh Folks, Graphite*** - NEVER stainless steel. Aim for as much area in the solution as you can!

**Tested with Best Micrometer on sample of deliberately rusted gauge plate, change in thicknes below 2 microns on the unrusted parts

***Which doesn't grow rusty barnacles so you don't have to revisit every few hours to scrub 'em off with a cold chisel and wire brush.

Cast iron makes for a good anode for a tank too. Lasts way longer than steel.
