Me neither....but I bought myself a mini grinder specifically to cut a chassis rail and I was determined it would work so all common sense went out the window as "I knew best". As it was a "mini" grinder I figured what possible damage could it do.....it turned out it could do plenty of damage! Those "mini" discs cut fingers just as well as a big grinder as it turns out

They are the work of satan. Those little things they use in Kwik fit places for exhausts?

I’ve got one that hardly sees the light of day but I can imagine it would do some damage if it bit you

I have never in all the 30+ years I’ve used a grinder needed to take the guard off. It annoys me when people do. I’m a daily user of grinders so that’s a lot of hours that have never needed no guard!

I'm nothing like a daily user but in nearly 10 years I've never taken a guard off.

Wait till you have another 3 tens under your belt and i guarantee the guard will come off for "specials"...I have 1 grinder that has no guard for jobs when a guard is in the way but i make sure its a cordless and always suck a sherbet lemon from Aldi for full on concentration

That twisted knot brush looks a right menace....I use them in my grinder but I have a leather glove on and face shield just to be safe from the thing.

Clean cuts I can handle....it's when I mangle my fingers it's really annoying!

When they’re (k)not trying to eat you they’re really good.

I’ve got a flat one for the grinder which is perfect for arc welding as I’m too idle to use a wire brush. There’s some discrepancy between 4.5” and 115mm as you need to animalise the guard o get them to work properly. Worth it though.

Today was a goos day.
Well most.

St Ives, call out. But a few nice items were found.

This did come with a box. The box was in poor condition when I got it. Walking back to the van in the rain killed it.
Oh well such is life.

... today I have acquired a lot of air and an improved braking system:

As the last vehicle that has to go through the TÜV/MOT for this year, it was the Unimog's turn.

What no inspector has ever done on my Unimog, as long as I own it: He kneels down next to one of the air tanks, lets off at the drain valve and watches again and again the corresponding pointers in the gauge, the pointers rush through, none of them stopped at the protective pressure -

Verdict: The four-way protection valve is defective. Thank you very much.


The brake was not affected in any way and if I lose air, then the spring brake accumulator will brake the whole car without my intervention,
but I could be happy to drive the 250m home from the village blacksmith

Normally:
Four-circuit protection valve does not work as intended -> serious traffic safety defect -> immediate shutdown on the spot ..... I was still lucky, so to speak, or better got mercy cause we know each other.



But I'm not complaining, it's safety related and we were able to take care of some quirks within the course of this repair.

... and maybe I am a little bit to blame myself:

When we installed a larger diesel tank a few years ago (believe me, 80l on this car is officially torture), the antifreeze injection pump tank was ripped off - the village blacksmith has bear powers!

At the open hole probably a) dirt could come in and b) the brake system was no longer supplied with Wabcothyl, which apart from the antifreeze certainly brings other caring vitamins and minerals into the system.
Leaving it like this for several years because I couldn't find a replacement for the reservoir may have easily contributed to the current problems.

Since we had to do now anyway in this corner, I suddenly remembered that I now have a lathe and milling machine available ...


First I built something with which I could remove the plastic thread rest from the tank port of the antifreeze injection pump ...

... and had success: thread M22x1,5


Then I could make a thread chaser to free the threads from the remaining plastic ...

... and had already a cap for this opening.



Afterwards I could build two adapters ....

... cut a thread in the reservoir ...

... and mount the whole thing on the car again.

A very successful action overall:
- The TÜV/MOT deficiency is off;
- By working that corner, we were able to find and seal many creeping leaks;
- - as a result, the Unimog now pumps much faster;
- - and holds air significantly longer;
- The lubrication, maintenance and antifreeze system of the air supply is intact again;
- - this fault should not occur again for a long time.

I'm quite happy how this worked out in the end.
