Those Dewalt 7 series saws are fantastic we use then in a production environment, they are bulletproof apart from a soft plastic component in the guard release, a simple mod soon sorts that. They get uses all day non stop some days cutting thousands of parts and just keep going.

Still using my DW701 type1 1600w i acquired sometime in the late 90's it has been looked after and not site used, Two decades of reliable use and no complaints.

The collet is an ER40, 32 mm collet (thanks @Kram). I'd guess you'd call that an oversize oversize collet as the oversize ones usually go up to 30. I've got the 3–30 mm ones as well as a 1/2" and 1" one already so this extends the set and gives me something to hold onto 1¼" (31.75 mm) bar, which I occasionally come across in a skip. Looks a bit flimsy and I doubt I'll use it much, but it'll be interesting to see how accurate it is.

The milling cutter (left) is a 20 mm diameter face mill thing. I bought a second-hand face mill on ebay a few years ago, but it's 80 mm diameter and while it's a wonderful thing to use, my little mill struggles a bit with it so I thought I'd try something smaller.

The three (16 mm shank) lathe tools were bought as a set. I've got some CCMT type tools (with a screwed-in insert) already and I like them a lot, but I do go through the inserts (which only have two cutting tips) quite quickly. One I bought a few years ago also is quite badly made and doesn't hold the insert firmly against the rear face (I don't use that one anymore). All three of the tools shown above seem to be adjustable for how they hold the insert against the rear face (using the screw in the middle) and then there's a separate clamp that holds the insert down. That seems like a very good thing in my view. The two with inserts fitted already use inserts that have 6 cutting tips (three on each side), so hopefully the inserts will last longer than the two tips on the CCMT inserts. The one that doesn't have an insert takes CCMT inserts - I'll probably fit a CCGT insert in it and use it as a dedicated aluminium tool.

I'm looking forward to trying them all out!

I've ummed and arred over getting this camera for a while, but there was on offer over the weekend with a reasonably amount of money off, and you still got the gimble free, so my credit card took a hammering..

Hmmm... perhaps not my most successful purchase. I went out to the workshop just now for a quick play...

Turns out I didn't do a good job of reading the blurb for this one. I thought it took CCMT inserts, it takes CNMG inserts. D'oh. I don't have any of those so I can't try this one out yet.

I got these two installed in tool holders and set on centre height. They both work and will make good hogging tools, but however much I varied depth of cut and feed rate, I couldn't get anywhere close to the finish I can get with a CCMT insert or a home-ground HSS tool. The chip breakers also don't start to do anything useful until the depth of cut gets very aggressive. The CCMT seems to break chips on steel pretty much regardless of what you do and gives a really nice finish really easily.

Any tips from anyone who has used these inserts (TNMG or WNMG) and got good results?

I guess I need to play a bit more (or maybe get some better quality inserts?), but I'm a bit underwhelmed at the moment.

The only thing I've got that will hold a 20 mm shank tool is an ER40 collet chuck, but that doesn't go very deep and will leave it hanging out too far. I could get an R8 20 mm collet, but the pin fell out of my spindle within a few weeks of having bought it (and the machine seller, arceurotrade, weren't willing to fix it under warranty) and that pretty much rules out using R8 collets (they just spin round when you try to tighten them as there's nothing to hold onto).

I think my only options here are either to wait until I move house and then get a bigger mill, cut the shank so that it's shorter or make a custom R8 thingy and maybe press-fit the tool in. Something I need to ponder on.

A lot of mills with r8 collet spindles, don't have a pin to stop the collet spinning, mine included. Just push the collet hard into the spindle with your left hand and tighten the drawbar with your right hand.

I'll try it again (although I don't have a 20 mm collet, so it won't immediately help). When I tried it last time (which admittedly was a lot of years ago) I remember finding it very hard either to tighten or loosen the collet (I can't remember which), but it might be I just need to learn the technique.

Went to Lidl this morning for groceries, but it would be rude not to buy some tools and bits and bobs too wouldn't it ? They had these clamp meters and ordinary multimeters. Took a gamble on the clamp type. 15 quid, cannot go too far wrong.

got this bench drill, free, all works although surface rusty, the table drill dags have been brazed up, I may keep this one and get rid of the others, except the AEG with 20mm chuck! this one looks a nice size, we shall see!
