Suggest a drill sharpening system

That reminds me, I came across a ‘sharpening system’ that I bought the hubby several years ago. Forgotten who made it, but it came in a clear plastic case, and is yellow in colour.

If I remember, it claims to be able to sharpen everything, including drills.

He only used it once, too complicated for him.

Yes looking at decent sharpeners I can buy a lot of bits for the price, I will have another go at hand sharpening, starting with some bigger sizes.

You can, but can you get the grind symmetrical? One flute cutting better than the other doesnt mak

My peepers are not what they used to be and I struggle sharpening sub 3mm drills so I bought a screwfix sharpener, total waste of time and money. Reading the thread with interest hoping someone suggests a decent sharpener thats not too spendy.

I have the Sealey version of the drill doctor, might not be the same quality but does the job and was half the price of the drill doctor

Anything less than 4mm I just buy, bought a bunch of Erbauer small drill bits from Screwfix, wasn't expecting much but really impressed and were cheap as chips

I generally use an angle grinder with a cutting wheel
Slow speed little bit tricky but I always get good results
I use a cutting wheel because you have to do the discarge rear the cutters and they must be really close to the tip of your drill bit

I have one of THESE but only for the little drills. I do the bigger ones by hand, it's my eyesight that is the problem nowadays.

They are very good, I got mine from Aim well over a year ago, it is the one for up to 13mm drills. The best price I could find on ebay was £235 with the postage HERE

Thanks for the link but as it is from China I don't fancy going that route. Few reasons, one is I would get slapped with customs charges, I always do Second is if anything is wrong with it then there is little hope of a quick resolution from the seller, maybe others experiences are different but I have had a few items from China and they have mostly gone wrong.

I ordered a drill doctor yesterday and it will arrive today, it is the 750X model so almost as expensive as the linked one above, hope it works ok It is a birthday present from the other half

Funny that I clicked on the Amazon 750X yesterday afternoon, this place is a bad influence.
I guess I will be spending the weekend sharpening bits.

BTW what is the advantage of sharpening to a split point?

Split points are more or less self centring and tend to cut through the material easier. I always grind split point when I sharpen a drill although it does tend to make the drill a bit weaker I would say. I have always ground my drills by hand but the eyesight is not quite as good as it once was and smaller drills are now a PITA and that is the main reason I have bought the sharpener, we will see if it was a wise purchase
