Given what you report ^^, I'd take it back to him and explain that you're unable to proceed with his job for the foreseeable future, due to health reasons, and suggest he get's someone else to finish the job.
His reaction will be the measure of him as a 'friend'/customer. Does he express concern for you or annoyance/disappointment that his poorly maintained machine is still 'hors de combat'? Let us know....
