Well I haven't done anything yet, but I know what I have to do. I opened the gate last night and noticed there was something wrong so I went to investigate:




It was installed badly from day one. I am just going to make up a plate with a new tongue on it and weld it to the post and then bolt my superhinge to that. Originally fitted with a hook and eye (which I specifically said not to do) I will try to make a few adjustments to it as it has sagged, not much but enough to be annoying. Going to need my pal Gareth to lift the bloody thing. It doesn'rt help that I have woken up with a stinking cold and sore throat :-(

Will be back with news later.

Brake pipes, they must fit them on the car first and them put all the other gear in! not getting caught out this time so while its in the air im doing the lot! they havent done bad for 20 years

Good job. I love making replacement pipes and brake lines. It feels to me like an art form that’s hidden from sight.

Well called a couple of pals and we (they) manhandled the gate into place then set to with a couple of rods, et voila:



All fixed and back working again. Need a new bit of reflective strip though.

Looks fancy but won't it just topple/twist when it's being used? Or is it a work of art?

It works! Three 1mm deep cuts.
Difficult to feed smoothely and can see it in the finish.

A milling cutter with shorter flutes would make a big difference.

I do have some shorter 2mm carbide cutters. Would there be any advantage doing 2mm first then opening up to 3mm with these? I suspect it would be worse.

@Pete. suggested something like that to me. He reckoned a 3mm diameter cutter might cut the 3mm wide slot oversize.

After an entire day spent cutting steel sheets using a cutting torch ...
Which I'm learning to use seriously (when a continuous molten metal drip is flowing like water I believe it's the correct travel speed ) .
Back home I've found two packages on my mail box.
Hitachi G13SE2 switch and brushes .
Replaced them , found out that armature might fail soon
Hopefully are just the brushes which need to seat Better onto the commutator but we're talking about a 20 years old angle grinder , used in a metalworking shop then left in the repair shop because of bearings failure,then in my hands used with wire brushes , stalled on a metal net for more than 10 seconds
Used for hours continuously after this episode.
Then in masonry business for the last year or two ,seen several repairs do to dust related problems.
I would be disappointed if it dies, you'll probably see a post of mine in the twin thread of this "today I acquired" where I'll tell you I've bought a brand new one .
Anyway tried my new to me Fein wrist killer (the drill I've bought roughly 2 weeks ago) and it works very well .

If you cut a 3mm slot with a 3mm slot drill, invariably it will end up oversize. How much depends on the rigidity of your machine.

& the 3D print too I guess? Tbh a little oversize isn't the end of the world.

The spring position looks correct to me. The mounting bracket is usually about an inch higher, just under the upper flange of the spring, but overall, it's correct. I've seen a couple of leg vises/vices with a different spring arrangement, but those seem to be much less common. Old catalogues show the spring the way you have it, and it works perfectly that way on my Peter Wright blacksmith leg vise. Here's a link to mine and the stand that I made for it:
