I remember that gate posts should be installed "on the batter" (leaning back), so they become vertical when the gate is hung.
Anybody actually do this?

Gates open: if I remember my maths O'Level, half the weight will be in the open position, half in the closed, so post not quite upright, and some lean towards the open position. I expect I'm wrong

Simply put in a big enough concrete foundation three time the weight of the gate & post it hangs off , putting the post in half of the length below the ground has stood the test of time for many many yearsUp to a point, Lord Cropper

I put my hot dipped galvanised gates on 10 mm thick 100 mm box section galv posts on a carefully levelled up engineering brick set in almost a foot of poured quick set footing concrete at the bottom of the hole , l laser levelled it to the same height on the other side.
A couple of hours later after lunch the quick set had gone off . On each of the hinge pins I set three 35 mm x 5 mm thick brass washers, slipped the posts down into the holes . put the gates on their posts & lashed the gated closed with a 10 mm packing strip between , then lashed a cross bar timber on the top of the gates and got my lass to hold them vertical as I poured in more quickset . Used ratchet straps and floor anchors to hold them vertical under a slight tension till it set using a few bricks and pairs of opposing wedges to take any drop down load off things
That was 24 years ago , 20 years ago they were still perfectly aligned after being opened & closed several times a day .

An excellent book, my favourite of Waugh's. 'Feather-footed through the plashy fen passes the questing vole' is another phrase from the book.

A big pile of semi-dimensioned sweet chestnut. All 20 mm thick and flat and square on three sides (the fourth edge will get dealt with when I've decided on the widths I want and the ends will be done much later). All prepared using a ryoba (Japanese hand saw) and a #5 plane.

I'm on 2yrs and 9 months. Sure as s**t my aluminium welds won't look like that in May!
