I see I have really started something with this. Just to be clear, if the tool isn't the right match to the thread you are trying to restore it won't work. And like I said, not cheap.

I’m always on the lookout for these sort of things that make my life easier.

As I am usually mobile between customers, I tend to get asked to do a fair bit of thread restoring, snapped bolt extraction etc etc

That's something well worth adding to any vice, IMHO.

About 7 years ago, bear with me, I built this:

Now, fast forward to Monday, and I turned that steel frame, that has been sat leant up against the workshop since it was last used, firstly into this:

An ER11 spindle

Made from 20mm EN16T (605M36T). I machined the tail end first, but only roughed the bearing seats:

I then flipped it around and used the fixed steady to get a centre in the end so that I could machine the outside of the chuck and cut the collet nut threads

I used the fixed steady again to drill the collet recess and cut the internal taper

With the same setting on the compound, I cut a short live centre at the chuck end to an ER taper so that I could mount the spindle between centres using the collet taper for one end:

Machined the bearing journals to +0.01mm and then lapped them to size. Very pleased that I managed to get them both pretty much spot on - just a few microns above the nominal size.

Then milled some spanner flats with the vertical slide.

Not much welding but some brackets to pull out some remaining bits of lintel that were left in the wall. Yes I can round off the corners but I had 15 minutes to make them and 10 minutes of that was occupied by unloading a delivery of 30 scaffold boards and 3 more 4.2m precast lintels.

Job was pulling the ends of this inner-most lintel out. Builders had propped up the wall above with a number of Acrows and Strongboys then cut off the ends of the existing lintel where they went into the wall. We then sunk 6 foot long timber screws to hold the brackets on and strung a winch between the two. Pulled one out and then relocated the bracket to the remaining timber lintel (outermost) and then pulled the second bit out.

Getting the first lintel in was fun... -1/4" clearance between the window and wall (window will be replaced anyway) and even with three of us it was an absolute sod. Then some pallet fork extensions through the window to take the majority of the weight and two additional helpers saw us lift it into place and they've stuck some compo onto it and lintel 2 of 5 to be done tomorrow morning.

Today I updated my thread dial indicator calculator to support a lathe with a completely ridiculous (in my opinion) thread dial indicator. Most thread dial indicators look something like this:

The lathe I just added (a Gosan 1740A) has a thread dial indicator that looks like this:

Suffice to say that it involved quite a bit of extra embuggerance to make the calculator work as I hadn't considered anything that daft when I wrote the first version.

Oh, and just in case you can't believe a lathe could have such a daft looking thread dial indicator, here's a photo I was sent (I believe the yellow arrows were added in an attempt to make it less confusing):

Actually, I quite like that - Marks for a full, half, 1/3rd, 1/4 and 1/5th turn all on one dial.

BIL is a specialist ( Cambridgeshire ) who goes all over the UK doing such plaster work mainly in very old and expensive mansions , castles & palaces .. he must be well paid for doing it as as he still runs an immaculate 3/4 ton LWB ex military Landrover with a cab on it for all his work
