I've got a Jaguar 'Ingenium' diesel engine in the workshop at the moment and needed a stand to put it on so I can work on it. It didn't look happy sat on a work mate supported by an engine hoist so I made this:



The problem I now have is how to get this:



into it!

The hoist legs are 125mm high and the gap under the workbench is only 60mm!

All suggestions gratefully recieved!

Hi,

I was just happy to do a very simple woodturning job today having been allowed in the workshop by the weather. I'm assembling a cyclone extractor and need adapters because as expected hoses and cyclone don't match up.

Turned from a lump of local holly.

A tight fit into the top of the cyclone but a nice friction tapered fit for the hose allowing the adapter to remain in the cyclone whist the hose is removed.

It was a pleasure just to do this and I even polished the car; whoopee I've enjoyed myself today. More adapters yet to make another for the cyclone but I also need three more for dust extraction to three machines yet to be made; I feel a bit of aluminium Tig welding coming on when I add extraction to the machines.

Thanks milkybars I have the data plate on mine - from my crude fumblings and measuring I have them down as 18 DP (1.777 in between centres) - I still need to have a rummage and see if I have a set of gear cutters for that size

If there’s castors,take them off,and hit/jerk the legs under ,assuming the legs are under 60.

A peg press,for extruding a 20 diameter wooden dowel peg ,using a mallet,and striking a roughly hewn oak blank,customer wanted a quick job,I’ve also made them with interchangeable dies and mounted on a tripod,not sure what the die material was ,but it hardened and wasn’t brittle.

That would be right. If you look at the plate above, every combination has 64 teeth total. 64 teeth at 18 DP has a PCD of 64/18 = 3.555" or a pitch circle radius of 1.778", the same as your measured centre distance.

I think Boxford change gears are 18DP.

Can you jack the bench up and put some wooden blocks under the feet to allow the hoist to go under?

My other half has just got back into knitting and wanted a Cedar of Lebanon lined box to store some woollen hand warmers to help protect them from carpet moths.

This is only my second attempt at a box (it's much bigger than the last one too) and a few things didn't go according to plan, but overall I'm quite pleased.

I meant to stick a ruler on the bench for scale before taking the photo, but I forgot. Dimensions are about 315 × 196 × 110 mm.

Sides are American Black Walnut, lid and splines are maple, inset thingy is (I think) greenheart.

I was very careful to be sure all the saw/chisel cut outs for the splines were deep enough that the splines would sit flush with the rims, but some of them ended up with gaps to the side. I think it was all the ones that I put in first - they probably slipped while I was putting the others in and I didn't go back and check they were firmly pressed into place. I haven't decided whether I'm going to do anything about it yet - I thought I'd apply some finish for now and mull on it (two coats so far).

I wasn't sure whether I'd like the look of the cedar lining, but it's really grown on me since the finish is applied.

I'm also rather pleased that I got the grain of the side lining pieces to match on all four corners:

Carolyn approves as well, and that's obviously the most important thing!

Few tip adapters for work. M16 end was already present so just cleaned the threads where required. Female end I parted off the metric thread, bored out with 8mm end mill (bore not concentric so a drill was useless) then drilled out to 9.5mm for 7/16-14 UNC. Should solve some issues should we ever have to use someone else’s kit again with our tips.

Where can I get those packets of tea that come with a mains lead so that all you have to do is plug in the packet and PRESTO out comes ready mashed tea.
