I have a forward control 101 field ambulance in to do some electrical work on for a mate, another mate also has the same vehichle but was looking for crank handles for the strecher lifts in the back, the one i have here has one so after playing with Mr Lucas finest smoke tubing i thought i would have a bash at replicating a pair of cranks. i had all the required material in the off cuts bins so set to work and the following is the result, not to bad if i say so myself.
And a huge thanks to Doubleboost for all of his informative youtube vids, this is where i have learned most of my machining including sticking the tap in the tail stock and turning the lathe chuck by hand to ensure a nice square start.
it's blooming great to have a functional lathe again.

So the same gates are finished,they’re being left to rust I like that and it’s fashionable now.i really like old rusty gates ,centuries old,and even some of my earlier projects are now maturing into this style.Im getting old .

Not really made as such although I did drill and bolt it and paint the under side.

I bought a chop saw the other week and there was a bundle deal to get the mitre saw stand for £25, what a bargain as thing is rock solid! That gave me an idea...

Wondered if I could buy more quick release clamps, indeed I could, so another £25 spent. Then ordered a welding plate from 7050PS and hey presto, nice solid but foldable welding table/chop saw stand!

Well happy with it for the price as i've been wondering what to do for ages to make a welding surface that's flexible for use but still strong enough.

I made a hexagon.

Actually, to say I made it might be giving me too much credit. I found it on Thingiverse, added a counterbore to the underside in Fusion and sent it to a friend with a 3D printer, four hours later he threw it to me from the window.

It's a Manfrotto quick release plate;

Rev.2 will have two holes, or maybe a recess for a piece of rubber to grip the camera better. I've never played with 3D printing before but it's very exciting, we're already talking about making a whole new pan/tilt head, but with stepper motors inside it.

Today I made a start to a hydraulic tank for one of the Cheetah Cats I have fitted out.
It is to fit into a side compartment so it has a bit of a shape rather than just square.

Plasma cut some 6mm 5083 and then tacked it together.

Fully welded inside and out with the exception of the baffles as they just needed stitched.

Ready for the lid to be welded on but I need to wait for the old tank to be brought to me so that I can get the position for the outlet and inlets.

Bit of fun, bit of old school and a bit of a laugh.

This was recued from the deep dark back of wood shed.



It worked, it a bit stiff. But the handle was scabbed up.




Metal cleaned up, wire wheel on a bench grinder. The handle was sanded, then 4 coats of French polish. It now has a smooth finish. The working parts had grease poked into them with a bit of wire. Then warmed. it worked.

Yes, they have seen better days, I am guess fire, weather and left in a garden.


Step one.

Was to soak in hot Citric acid, with a few others items.



Cleaned up. Wire brush and flap disc





The next stage was into a hot fire, with a good ember bed, carbon rich.



Same fire in which the crucible failed, waste not, want not.

They were brought to Cheery red, then plunged into cold water.


Then cleaned up with a flap disc and emery cloth.
Heated over the fire until dull red, then plunged into old engine oil.




Then a good wax and oil finish.

How this stands up, time will tell.

Some fun with Old school metal blacking.




Some odd old bits. I had a few more in the box, each thread is different. So the nuts and bolts are matched to each other.

Boiled up in Citric acid to remove the rust and crud.



Here they are drying out, along with the tyre levers. The thick metal plate holds the heat and gives a even heat source. I had to hit them hard with the bench mounted bench grinder wire brush.



Using this, they were all heated to about 500deg C.

Plunged into hot old engine oil.



The finish is pleasing on 75% of the items. Deep black, even and no pools hard formed.

25% didn't seam to take the oil very well.
A quick file test told me they are harder than the rest.

Just got to wax them now.

if i had a couple of hundred quid to throw at materials, i wouldn't do it like this...
i need somewhere solid to mount my lathe, and i had some scrap 2" box section so...
box section split in half down its length and cut to size, and welded to bench

the square plate was already there, is my vice mount.
which then brings the issue as to what to do about the top,
stock board would be a good choice, and i even had some knocking about..

damn, too small.
bit of OSB will have to do then.

lathe then bolted down.

Rebuilt the daughter's playhouse that she has had for 14 years. She is 17 today so I don't think she will be in a hurry to use again but it always looked nice in the garden.
Replaced more wood than I thought it had in it.
