Made 5 of the top plates for the steering joints from the bronze I was given, need to get some more as another 3 are required.

Then it was out to the plasma to cut some 8mm 5083 Alu up.

Tacked it together so I could check for fit on the boat before fully welding.

Ready to take to the boat tomorrow and start welding it in place, weather permitting.

Got the main part of the roller welded to the gunwale today, a stiff breeze and later on a lot of rain hence the cover., The davit has been cut off but lkeft in place to hold the cover up.

Bored out the plates that will hold the housed bearings and since I had just got a headcam I thought I would try it out.

Hi @eSCHEn what is the breed of the black dog.
It looks spitting image of a dog we got from the pound years ago
Shes a little grey now but the colouring is exactly the same.

She's a wee black and tan Jack Russell Terrier, same as the other two only different colour.

That being said, she exhibits a lot of the behavioural characteristics of a Lancashire Heeler so we think that must be a part of the genes somewhere. Dad was a fluffy short legged brown and tan JRT and Mum was a "standard" tricolour JRT.

Re my weather vane, it sat in the same orientation since Monday and I began to think I'd made the top end too heavy, but today it turned to reflect a change in wind direction - so, happy bunny, me.

Made a repair on the step-nippers posh treader that he keeps managing to bust...

Made a removeable vice mount for my ancient Woden vice. My work bench is deliberately small as they tend to become the last refuge of the discarded, unwanted and unused.
I can now remove it to leave a clear bench area. The mount fits into a socket made from 50 x 6 flat. The fixing bolt is machined down at the end to provide a start int the threaded back plate and is retained so that it jacks the mount out.

Quiet day, well for most part. Being "On-Call" and dull stuff.
Apart from a few hours play at "Hot Riveting."

So, reduced power tool day, needed to hear the phone.

This was long over due, should of been done a few weeks ago. But stuff got in the way.


I removed the worse of the rust by hand and gave it a good soak in steriliser solution. For a while it worked, but the rust came back. That led to "Mrs PANIC" kicking off.
So soaked it in citric acid and that removed the rust, to a point it didn't come back.
But it did looses the green finish, what was a good thing for another project.



It was then sealed with a food safe rattle can sealer. I was working on a site and the engineers were sealing a industrial food blender and said the stuff was safe. That should keep her happy.





Should be a quick clean up, using power tools?
Not today.


Brass was striped down, then using a mix of flour, vinegar and water. The metal was covered and sealed in cling film.
Then it was washed in warm water and polished with Brasso.
It shows the quality of the brass back then.



The paint was striped using hot caustic and it was a quick reaction. The paint is a brush on rust resistance paint from Aldi.



I got this a while back, but it was to big to fit a suitable rubber tube I have ordered. So a quick turn down on my friends lathe.

The keen eye will see the handle is missing. The wood is soaked through, but solid. It is drying out in the airing cupboard for at least a week.

The metal work for the coffee grinder is soaking in Citric acid, so I made a Cabinet scraper to remove the finish and build up of wax. Then a few coats of varnish.




As the paint and varnish was drying. It gave me a chance to make up some washers and seals for some paraffin powerd items I have.



First attempt was not what you would call 100% successful.
When it got hot enough to work the pump seal let go, it was interesting to watch a "jet style" flame appear from the pump and smoke signals.


MK2, was a lot better, no leaks and a decent flame.



So I made a full set for this small stove. I knew it worked before. So why make a set?

So I could experiment with different materials I had to hand. Most worked, but the filler plug seal does need some better materials as it swelled up when fuel got on it. Then it allowed pressure to escape. But it was a good learning curve.

This Bit and brace with 3 jaw adapter.



It cleaned up nice, but the 3 jaw attachment did not operate correctly, 1 of the jaws was sticking and dragging the other two down.

Then when the jaws reached near the end of the travel all three would jam. So you couldn't fully clamp down on a drill bit.



Normally you unscrew the base cap and remove the jaws and clean. This one did not allow me to do that.

A good clean showed there is a screw, that looks like it should allow that to happen.



It doesn't, it is a fake. It does nothing. It is part of the casting.
I know. I spent an age trying to free it off. Only when I got the hot spanner on it and released the base cap did it come clear, it is a fake.
So it was a simple job of de-greasing and removing a staple what was jamming the jaws.



Finished. The wood was sanded and finished with hot bee's wax. The shine was good. The metal was sealed with bee's wax, soften with meths.
