A batch of traditional and then choc chip rick cakes for the kids (yesterday):

Then today (for me), a bfo "rich fruit cake" from the Dairy Book Of Home Cookery, this in homage to my late Mum. There's 1.5kg of mixed dried fruit, chopped dates, glace cherries and mixed peel in it plus 8 eggs. Said 4-4.5hrs at 150degC but it's had about 3.5hrs and seems done. First fruit cake I've ever made:

That pulley was a cow to make, on my lathe. Had to get creative to work around the lathes limitations. Made from steel, not aluminium.

The screw & oil holes are drilled by hand, (still no pillar drill yet), so no picking on misalignment.

I have today finished making the tail stock die holder, something that could be bought for not a lot of money but I wanted something a bit different. Mine is double ended so will take 1" or 13/16" dies.

It was sized to fit into a length of steel that I happened to have, I turned the 1" end first then turned it around in the chuck to reduce the 13 /16" end, it was then bored through and reamed to take the 12mm silver steel rod upon which it slides.
At this point I noticed that:
I can not easily hold it to drill for the grub screws or 8mm rod handles.
I can not position it to as above.
I can not drill it accurately once the positions of the screws are found.

Holding it was easy, I super glued the 12mm silver steel into place, job done and it could be easily burnt out when I had finished.

To position the part I made the gear index plunger which I posted a couple of weeks ago, in the process finding that the 'Drummond@ version did need the longer reach and a distance piece so they had to be turned and made up.
Here it is in use with a forty tooth change wheel.

Which allowed me to use the tool post drill guide I posted last week.




All that fun for some thing that could have been bought for a few quid and arrived from China in less time that it took to make all the other tools required.

At least when you make it yourself, you get exactly what you want, & you know you're not relying on anyone elses interpretation of tolerances etc.

Drilling the grub screw holes & threading them before you taper the end up makes life a lot easier especially if you turn a fine ring groove on the stock so you get a line/ groove to work /measure to /with .

You are quite correct, I made it off the top of my head which is very bad form I know.
This did not even have a fag packet design which is probably why I had to resort to super glue arbour and to be honest if I had drawn it out and thought it through it probably would not have happened, I would have bought one in each size and would now be looking at the 3/8" 40tpi and 1/4" 40tpi screws I had already made.

Not made exactly, but started. When I built my new workshop 4 years ago, It was one of the conditions that I build SWMBO a new shed. Well, today I started!

A couple of jigs for truing twisted boards in the planer/thicknesser. Nothing fancy, just a sheet of 3/4" MDF cut to size with pine offcuts glued on the end, but it provides a flat surface to fix wobbly boards to:

How about drilling holes through, across the width of the planks.

The planks were wedged in solid, one or two lines of holes wouldn't have been enough to get them out, I would have had to drill holes in the entire surface area of the two planks and I still would have had to use a chisel by hand.

On your next fire place ???? Perhaps cut the wooden lintel in half minus a 4 inch wide chunk in the middle then screw it with a thickish bracing board to rejoin the correct length . Grease it with cooking oil etc . Pour the concrete using a mid board brace if you think you'll need one. Once it's been used and the concrete is cured unscrew the bracing board & gently ease / pull the greased planks out .

Drained, rinsed and oiled the inside of tank, keyed up the surface and masked off ready to spray. Im a little unsure if Ive masked enough or too much of the filler hole.
Stipped the filler cap, unsure what to do with it, might just 2k clear, or leave it polished metal. I dont think priming, silver basecoat and clear will end well.

The first real job on my cnc router - a jewellery box (box? Carousel?..) made from wood I brought back from Aus a couple of years ago - mostly different sorts of jarrah, plus curly blackbutt and a bit of banksia nut inlay. (Actually, the one I've shown is the prototype and has a softwood bottom tray which I did as a test piece).

Each tray pivots on an 8mm brass rod.
I've done four of them, for the four females in my immediate family, with the idea of giving them as presents when we can finally get together again to have the Xmas meal we missed back in December.

Funny you should mention that!

That jig I'm using is the one I fabricated when I built my workshop as that has 9 sections that size (3.600 long x 2.100 high). I'm just repurposing it for the shed. It makes a convenient work bench!

The shed will only be 3.600 x 2.000.

I've a welded up framing table my BiL lent me. Makes up 6'x6' panels nice and square. Pretty easy with the collated nail gun firing ring shanks. I thought I could maybe have this on wheels in a big workshop to use as a bench then just clear it for fencing now and again.
