Depends on if it's single wire, or twin wire CAN.
But I have seen twin wire where high and low don't mirror each other, and low is simply a lower voltage.

Ok, I try not to post on things that I am not sure of which is why I referred to BMS networks perhaps I should have Googled automotive Can However, if it were BMS I would be removing nodes to see which one was bringing + or _ down, when both lines returned that would be the faulty node found, with all nodes out and still bus shorted to ground that would be cabling.
I did not know that single wire can existed and by definition it would not be can as can needs both lines twisted together for spurious signal rejection same as Cat 5 / 6 etc. network or a balanced audio cable.
I now want to read up on can, not because I need to just because...

A two channel PC scope will not cost a lot, for occasional on site use we had a Tenma USB scope which I think is just a generic Chinese scope sold by CPC / Farnell the same item could have come from any of the usual suspects with a different colour case and different name on it, just we had an account with them.

Pretty intense day working on a pneumatic actuated alluminium profile chop saw.
Troubleshooting it the entire morning and solving the problems after lunch
6 hours working on it
All the pneumatic lines were leaking from the push connectors.
Found a stucked solenoid valve .
And some other air leaks.
It's working now but I'll have to replace all the connectors and tubes

Seriously thought about starting to machine a diff for a lister nobbly.

Just remembered about this post.
It all depends on the CAN specification being used. Automotive manufacturers hate any more expense than necessary, so they use lots of different network standards.
Typically two wire high speed CAN is only used to connect critical controllers, like Engine, Instrument Cluster, Gearbox, ABS/ESP, and steering.
They'll then use two wire mid speed for less critical things, like anything that falls under the convivence, comfort, or audio.
Then for the far less critical stuff that doesn't need much data, like lighting, they'll use single wire CAN, or LIN.

Off course different manufacturer's put their own spin on things, and very few vehicles will actually use a theoretically perfect loop through wiring setup. They'll quite happily add branches where needed, and/or use a star point, and just dump a terminating resistor in every module.

I've got a Hantek USB scope, two channels, was farily cheap and does the job for my little bit of tinkering from time to time.
Picoscope is the other name I know, but they cost much more and as nice as they are I couldn't justify the cost for my use.
