That’s a mileage to be proud of.

Yeh you don't really see many bikes over 60,000 through the workshop.

We work on a Yamaha FZ6 (Fazer) and he's on 110,000.

Few and far between though!.

Saying that Deliveroo lads can clock the miles up, seen some 8 month old bikes on 20,000 + miles!.

Jap bike engines have been capable of clocking up starship mileages for nearly half a century, and that on routine servicing alone.
Daily abuse and lack of regular oil changes is what kills them. Iow, the average idiot.

A nice easy fix today. The neighbour threw away perfectly good stirrup pump because the valve adaptor was knackered.

A quick shufty on eBay a few days ago, and a new one turned up this morning for the princely sum of £2.85.

Three minutes later, et voila.

It's still plastic though, I got the most expensive track pump in Halfords because it had a metal end, and I don't regret it one bit, it's excellent. So good in fact, I got a second one.

Interesting, have you got a link please? I have a stirrup pump that I bought from Aldi a few years back, valve thing looks very similar, and when I put it on a tyre there's a competition between how quickly I can put air in vs. how quickly it can leak it back out again. I have a slow puncture on the back tyre of my car, and I actually use this because even with the leak it's quicker than the cheapo electric compressor that I got from Home Bargains, and my proper compressor isn't interested in starting up in this weather.

With my diesel heater installed I am now targeting various draughts in my double garage.

The pedestrian door had a 18mm or so gap all along the bottom. Freezing cold air was blowing in steady. Not any more:





Now to address the 5m long 50mm gap at the roller shutter head tomorrow

£1.49 spent at Toolstation, 5 minutes extracting the broken piece, job done!

This German Stirling Engine was in need of some tlc.

They do not like dirt or oil.

I had to strip this engine down.

A hint of more dirt.

The cold side was seized with dirt. The Con rod was bent and had a few burrs.

Finaly running.

This engine was bad. It turned over, but it was notchy.

It was also badly put together.

So I sriped it down and left it in a Vapour Meths tank.

This not good.

Metal flakes, from deep inside the hot side of the engine.

At last running. A real pain to get working.

Bodged fridge compressor relay, now manual / automatic until the new relay arrives.

I got round at last this morning to a job I've been putting off for months! The engine of my JCB3CX has been over cooled - the temperature gauge never lifts much off the lower stop and I've suspected that the thermostat is jammed open, or maybe has been removed by a previous owner. I'd bought a replacement stat and gasket months ago but the cold weather, and the fact that the drain plug is in an awkward place has lead to procrastination !

Today was a little warmer, and I applied a trick shown to me by a plumber friend to easily drain fluids - crack open a joint and apply a Wet & Dry vac to collect the coolant. It worked a charm - virtually nothing spilt and level reduced to the stat flange.

The stat WAS installed and was closed so a puzzle why it was over cooling - anyway flange joints cleaned, new stat and gasket fitted, and I was able to re-use the coolant as I'd thoroughly cleaned the vac first.

Ran it at fast idle for a while - stat opened at about 85C and for the first time in my ownership the temperature gauge shows a sensible reading. A went very well - only drawback was one of the six flange hold down bolts had previously had it's flats rounded, but my Irwin bolt remover sorted it out in no time.

This really has me puzzled, I tested the old thermostat in a pan of boiling water - it resolutely stayed SHUT. So why was the engine over cooled and not overheating

The over cooling was cured by installing a new thermostat so this defies logic - can anyone give me a logical explanation of what's happening here ?
