Stuff you have fixed today

I doesnt matter how many outside taps you have they never seem to be in the right place or the hose just not long enough, so todays quickie was to stick an outside tap on this unused main in one of the outbuildings except the size of the thread was like nothing I had in stock, luckily I had an alkathene to 15mm copper stop tap and pipe inserts left over from my house bashing days, a bit of copper and a nice flush backplate, just got to find a bib tap now...

I confess to having 29 outside taps on the farm between the fields, chicken run, pig stys, veg patch workshop, house etc. As you may gather I don't rate carrying water much !

For instance when I trenched for water for a cattle trough at the far end of our 10 acre field I was using 50 metre coils of 25 mm pipe and decided rather than put in straight joiners, each joint is a Tee branch to a tap. Surprising how often this has come in handy over the years.

I fixed five of these tread plates in a shaft that was a dustbin schute, 6 floors 2 flights on each floor , up and down several times over 2 days , my legs are killing me !

I got this running today

I was surprised it ran at all
Having not been on the road since 1994 allegedly,
Though it was garaged
Removed the very flat battery,
Checked for spark and fitted a random spark plug,
edit: there was no plug in it, I think the owner had removed it recently.
Air box inlet pipe removed,
A squirt of brake cleaner,
And it fired after 3 or 4 kicks
Vacuum fuel tap flushed through
Fuel pipes flushed through,
Carb stripped, cleaned,
Crumbling foam air filter removed,
Now running and ticking over,
Ready to be moved on by the owner.

This engine was stripped down, cleaned and just given a wax.

The flywheel was out of true, so I asked a friend to alow me to use his press. I few gentle press runs had it true.

Oddly, after it was wax, so residue of the solid fuel tablets seamed to hace leached out form hard to reach parts.
A buff uop had them removed.



This is how this engine came my way.
Flywheel was not on the engine.
Safety valve was stuck in a semi open position.

As the engine is original condition, very little was done to it.

It was stripped down, as the pipe from the boiler was weeping.
The flywheel was worn. But as it was a 1959 engine the fly wheel had a hole drilled, but not tapped, in it.
So I taped it out and using a mecanno screw fitted it.

Our Klargester private sewage plant had roots coming out of it's clean water discharge pipe. It was installed over 20 years ago prior to our ownership, and we had had an attempt at clearing it 12 years ago when we dredged the stream that it discharges into. Not easy requiring 'volunteer' to sit in digger bucket suspended over the stream from the opposite side. But although the pumped discharge water still flowed it obviously needed clearing.

It had been installed with no provision for rodding the pipe, which was about 10 metres of 50 mm plastic, transitioning into 110 underground brown pipe for an unknown length with no indication where the joint was.

Time to take the bull by the horns and this week I've had a young and fit chap trenching the lot out from the stream to the sewage plant - quite deep - loads of spoil.

Yesterday we got to the 'root' of the problem - the bodging installers had just slipped about 30" of 110 mm brown pipe over the end of the 50 mm plastic WITH NO COUPLER. Add in the fact that the stream bank is awash with willow and alder and of course their roots just took up residence until it was jam pack full. I've never seen a pipe so blocked.

The fix, run 110mm underground sewer pipe all the way from the Klargester pump outlet to the stream and incorporate a rodding eye, and a little inspection chamber for access to the rodding and and the 50 / 110 mm transition so in the future not only can the pipe be rodded but the transition joint can be inspected.

I am amazed that water was still getting through that clogged pipe - though it is a powerful pump.

This is what 3am is for.

This 1957(approx) SE1 Mamod cam my way. I knew it needed some TLC.
The paint was applied in layes, like butter icing on a cake.

But it did steam. Ok we had a few seals that needed to be replaced. But for its age I was not shocked at that.

The paint stripper worked. But only one layer at a time. Wrapping it in cling film help speed the stipping up. 8 layes of green paint, over the original red.

A fair bit of matel bashing when into getting the plate flat. This plate had no cracks on the mountain holes. That was nice to find. They can be TIG anddressed back. But the plate always warps
There are still some pits and flaws. They are original, so were left.

What so special about this picture?
Nothing, apart from the original felt oil pad. You can tell it is original, as it does not fill the hole it is in.

Fullly assembles. ran on compressed air and when the paint is fully cured I will cook it and run it on steam.

The keen eyes will spotted the con rod looks differant.
It is.
It is a Mamod replacement one. The rotingals were flat plate back when this was made. The connecting hole to crank would become oval very soon. This con rod was supplied as a replacenent.

A 1920's Hose nozzle, fitted with a post WW2 hose adapter.
Should not need much.

But it passed no water.

A lump of plastic.

Now fitted with a modern hose adapter.;

A Bren Gun Grease container.

B it of a clean.

Then it jopins the Vickers 303 Gun one.

I made an adapter for my new to me 18V drill.

I've cleaned some mucky grease, replaced all seals and bearings. Refill with white food safe grease.

Replaced the poxy wing nut things on Mrs79’s mower as they snapped.

2 minutes to draw them out and about the same to cut them. I put helicoils in rather than directly thread the aluminium.

Fixed it

Deal in exchange for not having 100% concrete is im not cutting the stuff. Happy to “get a man in” but she likes doing it apparently.

I’ve no problem paying someone. Keeps the money local and keeps the money going round.

If you send me a back of a fag packet drawing I can easily make you some spare felt pads on the CO2 laser.

Its scarey when you look under some motors and see what the towbar is attached to, mainly rust on a lot of them!

I put a rear 1/4 on a discovery two for a friend. “It’s not terrible, I just want peace of mind” his ricker fell out when I dropped the tank and showed him the only thing keeping his nice big horse box attached was the sum total of about 6” of metal across both legs
