Whilst on a tour of Canada for nearly 3 months using MIL's home at Welland lock number one near Niagra falls as a base .This was a very nice restoration.

The blade and cap were jammed, but with a few taps I had them out.
The blade is bent, this was causing the jam. A few deft blows on a anvil had the bend removed.

The metal was cleaned using a scouring pad. The blade was re-ground on a wet stone, then sharpened on a oil stone.
The wood was cleaned with meths, then using a cabinet scraper cleaned up.
The finish is just bee's wax, the wood took it well and buffed up.
This old plane is a joy to use, the old steel took an edge very well.
On our outward Eastward circuit we went to the Upper Canada Native village to the East of Toronto . There are a fair few original moved to the site historic Canadian buildings one of which is a wood workers workshop . I stood and watched this " Expert " do a demo of planning a bit of Birdseye Maple to show how the old block planes were used ., He was struggling .
As every one left I asked to look at his plane , you could have ridden bare arsed to Mexico on it , so I offered to sharpen it to 30 degrees on a hand turned water stone & hone it on an oilstone for him , having sharpened the blade I asked him if he had any bees wax .......he looked puzzled .
I showed him how to warm & wax the sole then polish the waxed sole . It made me smile when he used it and said to me , " I've been running this shop for 30 years and your the first person who's shown me that . Told him about using mutton tallow to lube / protect his steel tools and use tallow saws to make them easier to use.
