Stuff you have fixed today

Today I fixed my excavator, a lump of steel ripped one of the tracks off, as they were at the end of their life I changed the pair.
Never easy when the thing is so far of road, I dragged one track up to it with the delicious and fitted that.

Friday isn't my day, last week master cylinder gave up.
This week after hitting a crator mid flood i smashed the exhaust of at the manifold. So this morning welded it back up, im due building a new exhaust anyhow.

But just like last week it means working later and catching up on Saturday.

Didnt start mixing up until 3:45ish

Doing some work for a tree surgery firm repairing machinery lately. Broken drive belt cover brackets on a stump grinder, various welding on wood chippers, snapped tipper body hinge and a horrendous (read: cheap) exhaust repair on a 9t 360° excavator that'd been welded badly many times before.

Had some funny issues with the Kemppi. Not sure if it's because it hasn't been used for a year or poor power supply.

I cant fathom why tree surgeons not so much foresters break stuff so often. Almost like its a challenge.

My son is one and despairs at the attitude his colleagues have towards their kit, ‘company will pay’ was the mantra at his last firm in west London. He did the basic maintenance there - one day a week in the workshop sorting out the kit, his guys wouldn’t even sharpen their chains, he left in frustration during the first lockdown, now working like you - a couple of days a week on the trees in north London then the rest making mirror balls

I fixed the problem of keys and a laptop locked in a room...

Tried raking the lock, unsurprisingly to no avail so gave it bit of a kicking. Notice the screws dont match and the frame is already chewed up, I suspect it's not the first time it's come off.

I think the screws are going to fall out of the Perko soon to stop it happening again.

I did this to their 3 Timberwolf machines. The little piece in the flywheel housing, a broken clamp on the discharge chute, repaired the "nozzle" on a discharge chute, all 3 needed the blade acess panel repaired at the bottom. At least one has had the chassis welded up.

They have a huge Bandit chipper, can't fault its build quality.

Yep, some are terrible. Most of these guys don't look after the vehicles or equipment. One of them recently managed to snap the back handle off a big Stihl saw, while using it, and didn't see why he should pay for the part to repair it.

I own a bunch of my own saws, they're all kept clean, maintained, sharp. People rarely seem to look after others' stuff.

After having funny issues with my Kemppi lately, it was "stopping" mid-weld, wire stuck dead in the weld like it'd been switched off.

Cut some little pieces and zapped them together, confirmed machine is fine and it must've been down to lousy on-site power supply.



Gonna claim that as a fix, since i did nothing else today.

Tried fixing a snapped bandsaw blade for the first time today. Two brand new blades in a row snapped on the joint within a few minutes of being fitted and I was stuck to get a job done so I tigged it back together, wasn't sure what the procedure for annealing was so just heated it up to red and let cool naturally. It got the job done and I'll just have to see how long it lasts

My friend asked me to have a look at an sewing machine for him, couldn't tell me what was wrong or anything about it, just assured me it didn't work. As usual I was expecting blown caps, fuses or worn brushes...

Imagine my suprised when he turned up with an overlocker that wasn't even broken. It took me about an hour to rethread it and it works perfectly.

Still got paid; a box of stepper motors and a coconut Toblerone.

Made good use of 3 hours being unloaded in Harrow by updating the works lights on the wagon.

2 new led lamps on the back of the cab to replace the existing ineffectual 21w lamp:




And a smaller led either side of the cab for reversing:




And also given the interior a good fetlle to get rid of the glutinous mud that seems to be a staple of most brick manufacturers' yards .
