since you changed my starter my cooling fan's noisy..

I avoid people like this at all costs. They will never change and in my experience only get worse.

Every time I see peoples power tools, I realise that I must be really anal in how well I look after mine. I'd be aghast if I let any of mine get like that, & yours is quite tidy compared to some.

I use "Industry Cleaner" from Wurth to give them a wipe down and clean every once in a while. I paid good money for them, I will look after them.

they are expensive but the v10 is great they do a v11 now but thats well over £600
the mrs used the v8 then went over the same carpet with the v10 and the canister was half full again

Bloody frightening isn't it.

We'd been using a plug in Dyson for years then got a V10 (I think) and the amount of gak that came out of the carpet was staggering.

Repaired my motorbike gearbox today. I lost the ability to select gears on the way to work yesterday. Had to walk the last mile in full gear = not fun. Got it back home today and tore the gearbox out of it - also not fun on a BMW you have to split the whole bike in half.



Anyway, turns out these two parts I guess were resistance welded had come apart., so turning the shaft did not actuate the shift drum.



A quick blast of TIG and they were once again permanently reunited.



Now it's all re-assembled (after de-gunking inside the cases) and ready for putting the gearbox halves back together. I've ordered a new clutch plate which I hope will turn up tomorrow so I can put the bike back together. The clutch isn't actually knackered but I thought I'd fit one now so I don't have to spend all day doing it in 6-8 months time.


All in all, very pleased.

Nah - it's just that the unit construction of the UJM means that to get to anything in the gearbox you have to remove the engine, lift the cylinder head, remove the cylinder block then you can split the cases so you can get to the cogs etc.

Yours is like an old British bike - gearbox and engine are separate items. Think the BM is bolted on to the engine casing rather like a car, older bikes have a primary chaincase, specially designed to keep the moving parts away from you and provide a steady drip of oil onto the garage floor...

Yes ! On my FZR you have to strip the lot down to reach the gearbox so it costs a fortune in gaskets etc, unless you do what some of the racers do and leave out the two bolts holding the crankcase halves together under the barrels.

I meant the boxer engine really. Got one here with 91k miles on it could do with a bit of an over-haul.

Yes some Jap bikes can be a swine. Many Suzukis you can pull the bottom case half off without removing the head. The xs/xj1100 engine has a large sump pan and you can get at least some of the gears out via the sump. One of the biggest advantages of modern inline-4 engines is having the camchain on the end of the crank instead of in the middle. It's still a lot of work though.

I once bought a near mint Kawasaki KR1S for £400 with a knackered 2nd gear and was preparing the have the whole thing apart but then for out it had a cassette gearbox
Some second hand gears and a gasket and it was fixed! Bloody lovely.

Turns out most modern kettles have some sort of bimettalic switch....?
After finding it buried inside, quick tweak with a pliers....another piece of landfill saved

Colleague (well, boss - head of faculty) was replacing some tines on his scarifier and he managed to crack a part prising off an E-clip so I said I'd have a go at repairing it... it was magnetic so ferrous but it didn't occur to me until after that it was, I'm pretty sure, die cast - it smoked and spat like hell!

Youngest son and I have replaced the headlight on my oldest sons connect. Easy enough job but the wing had to be pulled out and the bumper sewn together with cable ties. All the end result of a visiting camper van stopped in the middle of the road on a corner! Son took to the verge and hit a fence post at 15mph. I disbelieved him but witnesses agreed with him.

End cap of solar heating tube cracked and fell off. Instead of trying remove it completely, and probably make it worse, I printed a new cap in petg and glued it on last night. Put the water on this morning and no leaks so far.
