i also fixed some very substandard welding in the exhaust, it had no penetration on these joints at all so it cracked.

i also changed the turbo outlet pipe so it has a vband at both ends.

nearly ready to reassemble...

fiddly little things done today to the race car engine whilst waiting for little fiddly things to arrive. also went to a horse show, so there is that

1st was the heater port on the rear iron. this was cut off and capped, and id like to reinstate it, if only for windscreen defogging, so i wanted to tap it to take a fitting. first i cut the rest of the old fitting flush with the iron, them i drilled it to 18.5mm. lastly i tapped it to m22x1.5, all i need to do now is screw in a m22 x 1.5 to 16mm hose tail adapter in and job jobbed...








the other job i finished this afternoon (and i say finished because the prep for this with a blast cabinet and a wire wheel took 6+hours over 3 days last week) was to bright zinc plate and yellow passivate all the old bolts from the engine ancillaries etc and a load of new ones too.





this is only about 1/3 of the bolts and nuts...



that's better than rusty

time to start reassembly i think...

When I was really into this I would just take a sack full of bits down to my pal and he had a big plating plant, He would put the lot into one of the baskets and a couple four hours later they would all come out nice and shiny. I sure miss that guy.

Dishwasher decided to trip out the electrics today...I guessed it was the heater element but the model number is on the back so had to remove the machine to get the part number .

As I was there I pulled off the heater power plug and did a test run...yup works fine on cold which is handy as it was full of dirty dishes!

Quite pleased with my workaround ..will tape off the plug and use as is until the new part arrives in a couple of days.

Years ago when we had similar I used a Y divider & two lever washing machine taps to cobble up something up to supply hot and cold in via the cold inlet

Quite funny...I almost went that route too. Thermostatic mixers are only £15 so lot cheaper than a pump...but I hate plumbing so decided to go with the easier option.

Mixer is a good idea too...cheaper way than using the appliance heater I think.

Just a small job today, but I fixed something that was irritating me. The plastic instrument panel cover/lens of my GT18 garden tractor was a bit yellowed and cloudy to say the least. Here's how it looked before cleaning:

After about 30 minutes of rubbing compound, polish, wax--and some elbow grease--it turned out pretty decent. Not quite as clear as glass, but not too bad:

I sometimes run out of elbow grease, but usually a hot shower, a libation or two, and a good night's sleep replenishes the supply.

Next task on the GT18: Replace the fuel gauge.

It's dependent on how long the pipe work is , a 20 foot run full of hot water going cold soon racks up your fuel cost , where as a cold fill machine only heats the water being used to what ever temperature you set the heat level to .
Cold fill only has bee the norm for well over 25 years

We have a hot water tank...reckon it's about 5m of pipes from the tank to the dishwasher...probably worth doing but I couldn't face doing plumbing under the sink which is easily my least favourite house job. I'm tall so it's a nightmare working under sinks!
