Stuff you have fixed today

Chainsaw day,
First full strip & clean,
then rebuild carb with new gaskets, new drive sprocket, needle roller for brake, Decomp delete & New unrestricted exhaust,
new larger air filter and housing, and i spoilt myself and got wrap round handle for doing awkward cuts.
used genuine Husqvarna parts, as i have seen how much a new saw would be

Then finally got to use my chain sharpener, 4 x 24" chains in under an hour, but it did show up how uneven my hand sharpening has been.

Got back yesterday from 2000 miles around Scotland. Decided to finish stripping out the last of the broken glass from the JCB door and straighten it.

Some 2x4 to raise it up off the bench and a G clamp to pull it back into shape then TIG welded the cracks back up.

Also decided to fill in the hole in a corner (was much smaller but the Milwaukee die grinder made the hole bigger quickly).

Decent fit for what was several inches out previously.

Glass coming to be fitted on Wednesday so off to find some vaguely colour matched paint so tidy it up before the sealant goes on it.

Our house insurance states that you need a "certificate of sweeping" or some such nonsense from a certified chimney sweep (whatever one of those is), how do you get around that doing it yourself?

I thought about just going on the course and getting myself qualified, or just doing what I normally do and giving it a good ignoring, but I'd be interested in what the fellow DIY sweeps think / do.

Good job by the way, and if you fancy nipping round to do mine whilst you've got the rods out I'll get the Mrs yo make you a brew.

We've been with 3 different insurers whilst we've lived here and all have had it as a clause in the small print.

I suppose its a bit like if you blow the house up doing your own gas work they won't pay out etc.

next mercedes problem.... abs...

no big surprise a high mileage car has a few niggles. but the abs fault it just came up with causes the cruise control to stop working, which is no good at all!

live data shows front left speed at 0 when moving, other 3 are ok. swapping the sensors side to side moves the fault, so that'll be a sensor then. £35 for a sensor is no problem... its just whilst i was in there i found something else...

i knew both front disks where thin and badly lipped... i did NOT know that the front left was cracked all the way through from the edge to the hub.(and the dealership missed that when they did their 'health check" the other week...) i also postulate that the caliper sticking slightly is the cause of the abs sensor failure, so i took the calipers off and cleaned them up, only to find them totally free. having reassembled to prove, it turns out the flexi hose has started to fail, and acting as a non return valve.

so that's a pair of disks, set of pads, abs sensor and pair of front brake hoses. thats £160 trade, not too bad but not what i need right now, plus i kinda need the car this weekend...

Insurance requirement here too, though you can buy a compressed wood ‘log’ that you put on the fire which supposedly cleans the chimney, it comes with a certificate!

Window on the XK8 has been catching since I put in a new regulator a while back.

The adjuster to tilt the window in was at its limit, so had to move the rail in a bit

Drilled a new hole for the rail retaining bolt.

Now working perfectly.

Never been asked for one by any of the insurers we have used for this house, in the 28 years we have had it.

but of course it wasn't as simple as just fitting them. it all went back together fine, until i got to the brake hoses. the brake line flare fitting was just a blob of rust. having cut the fitting off, the pipe was now too short, so, of course, the logical thing to do is shorten it more and add a extension. then do the same the other side. this was a 0 cost repair, as i had the steel line and steel fittings, plus the joiners already in stock.

that pain in the ass sorted, it all bled up fine. abs light is off, all is well. there is also no drag at all when the wheel is spun, so that's fixed too.

oh and, this is the better ( not cracked) old brake disk.

I’ve just replaced the front ball joint on my ……..wait for it don’t laugh Skoda Yeti using Febi Bilstein parts. Looked exactly the same as the original part at a fraction of the cost in my mind brilliant parts at a very reasonable price.

you need a referral. so unless you are a registered garage, and can get a referral off of another (i've not gained any referrals yet before you ask ) then its pretty much impossible.
