Fixing the mud!

Sorry to hear that your mud was broken. I hope it will be OK.

(I take it you're replacing the muddy soil with something like road base material?)

Winter is waning, and we're getting ready to enter 'mud season' here in Maine. I'm trying to figure out a good gadget for quickly and completely cleaning the soles of my boots so that I won't have to take them off every time I go into the house.

Those micro drills...are they branded, from a reputable manufacturer. All of the ones that I've seen in the same moulded dispenser, are a complete load of tosh. One lot I bought off eBay didn't have a single drill of the nominal size it was supposed to be. A couple of them came close. The smallest drills weren't even sharpened. They just had broken off ends!!

Better off buying carbide pcb drills, they're throwaway money

The mud will be put to use elsewhere it stays wet in that spot about 4 months of the year, even with foot traffic and the dogs it's a mud bath! Membrane and 8 inches of crushed hardcore should make it a bit more usable

How is the rainwater that falls on the hardcore on top of the membrane going to drain away?

A few weeks ago a member donate me some nice items.

The oil stones are a very fine grit, but caked with age old dirt.

Now the stone is removed, you can see the oil seeping out.

Boiling them up with washing soda had the oil removed.

A week in the "Meths." vapour tank had the oil from the wood removed.

The drills were cleaned up, inspected and de rusted.

Not all could be saved.

This was set of two I had, one red and one green.
But the green one glass broke, so that lantern was cleaned up, painted black and this red galss fitted to that.

As it was the better of the two.

So, it was dumbed into a bucket of Citric acid.

This was almost the death knoll for this lamp, but I had time, so we had a go.

It worked.

One stamp I found was GPO, so has I have no replacement Green glass. I converted it back to a GPO lantern.


I did post here about suitable paint, but on the trial peace it looked like glass that was painted. I will try again.

Fuel tight, new wick and a new cork gasket.

This Brass and Cast Iron charcoal Silk iron came my way. They used to be very expensive, but now they are cheap, if yo can find one.

The newer ones have a plane heat oven.
Older ones have a design to increase the heating area.

You need to remove all the old charcoal residue, as it will not allow the citric aid to do the de-rusting.

These stoves are vey useful, heating brews, heating de-rusting fluids, warming workshops etc.


This one I knew was rusty, but how bad I was yet to find out.

Dismantling opened up a can of worms.
Both screws were working loose, then both broke.
That debrie you see is the burner.

It got worse.

Oh yes, Sealy rust remover does not.

New parts arrived.

Oh yes, always check "free wicks", as looks can be deceiving.

Drill out the old screws and cleaned the holes up, 1/4 whit.

The filler cap died when cleaning it up, the rust was to bad.

The wick not feeding correctly, so I used a new one.

This is why you need to ensure a clean even feed.

Part 2

Fitted, but not seen is the cork gasket, this stops any fuel slooping out when the stove is moved.

This is how the lifting handls should be fitted. I see so many "Restored" stoves with them fitted wrong.

The Mica window is important for a clean and even burn.

lots of things fixed today..

first i fixed the old quad by watching it go off to its new home..

then i made new air tank straps for dads horsebox... this is slightly more work than it looks, as i started with a sheet of 1.2mm steel, not flat bar....

and lastly i fixed the very limited camera view for my doorbell by fitting the 3d printed standoff that ive had sat at the bottom of the stairs for the past 6 months...

also re swept sand into the block paving to refill the bits that settled. all in all a productive day.

1990s Nissan headlight switch now 90% fixed - headlights would both flash on but only one turned off afterwards Now both turn off - sometimes.

Ignoring The “No user serviceable part inside” sticker found a sticky slider unit. It’s better but not 100%. Ideally the worn white nylon actuating finger would be replaced but unobtabium …



Next question: how to remove 1/2lb of sediment / dust from the fuel tank (tank is still in-situ and can’t be removed easily, great access from above when the pump / sender unlit is removed)

Vacuum oil extractor is great for that.

Update on chinese belt sander....refitted a latching contactor (to stop it's starting plug in), it's mandatory in EU but not in the UK or rest of the world. 3rd etc,,, They have saved pennies?

Thrown a bit more money in the ground, about 120 ton of hardcore in and trampled, should make it loads easier now turning trailers and storing the implements

90s Nissan. The rebuilt Frankenstein carb is good - the new problem is fuel starvation

I bit the bullet and removed the tank. It had fine dust (dry mud?) inside & out, also 1/2lb of rust chunks in the bottom
Results from 2nd flush in the photo, 1st was worse !


The fine filter on the pickup in tank has also disintegrated (letting debris & air bubbles into the fuel line) so I’ll get a new one before refit.

It’s another quick job that’s taken a whole afternoon to get this far

New front brake discs on the golf today, old ones were 22mm after 110k miles, new ones 25mm.

Also flushed through new brake fluid on each side. Now why did I wait for 40 year before buying one of these bleed bottles. One of my best buys, no more faffing with bits of tube and milk bottles.

The last tube in my bathroom mirror gave up the ghost a few days ago.

Since I intend remodelling the bathroom, and the kitchen -

in fact the whole flat, I made use of some LEDs that I had kicking around.

It's a bodge, but I couldn't be arsed spending too much time on it.
It'll do until D-Day

It's definitely better than the one tube tgat was down to.

first off the neighbours trees are getting too tall to hand trim and so is the councils and i need to trim some branches back to the boundary

both of them will not maintain there trees by trimming them back to there boundary and im sick of the leaves ( i wish i could return the lot back onto there property and let them sort out there own waste as its not mine ) same as the fruit law

so i need a pole saw and im not paying for one

however i do have an extending painters pole so make a holder for the saw to fit on it
