Another mower problem,this was a freebie,as he’d given me a nice car seat for my camper.
Farmer owner had tried replacing this bevel gear,but butchered it to the point,whereby the massive galls and burrs he’d thrown up stopped the replacement gear sliding onto the shaft,gear bore was too hard for my boring bars,so

a flap wheel was used in the die grinder

I've been using (and abusing) a heavy duty Makita DHP348 drill / driver for many years, recently it has been running rough and I thought the gearbox was on it's way out.
Yoo-toob showed brushes melting the nylon brush carrier was a common problem and says brushes are £3 and a new backplate is a fiver if they're needed

About 30 mins later I'd stripped the drill, unpicked the brass holders from the melted nylon backplate, cleaned and refitted everything then tested it.
I'm chuffed and no need to fork out £100+ for a brushless replacement !

That's one of the pluses for Makita drills, they have a good spares availability & they're not too expensive.

I’ve had a run of 4.5” grinders,either stopping or farting and burping,it’s always the brushes,some brushes just a few months old,yet worn half way down and ragged ends,some had fallen apart,

so I got these which looked genuine,so this grinders working again .

Hydrovane 15: A friend spotted this lying unused in a small factory he sometimes visits and knew I'd had problems sourcing a coupling for my Hydrovane HV05 a while back - he thought it would be a potential source of spares for me. Long story short I bought it and went to collect the other day - a visit that itself turned into an epic (*).

Once home I realised that it was better than 'spares or repairs' and decided to give it a bit of TLC. It was basically working but with several leaks and a tank with a lot of 'salad cream' in it. I ordered up a service kit and a pair of 10 mm / 3/8 BSP fittings to fix the leaks and the bits arrived today.

Service kit comprises mainly the oil / air separator, a replacement pressure gauge, and various O rings and bonded seals. That was all quickly fitted, as was the air leak cure of a straight and 90 push fitting - they were even pre-PTFE covered.

I'd run it up a few times to get the oil hot and drained and replaced it, and drained the tank of it's salad cream - so it was just a case of running it up to pressure then adjusting the cut off regulator to the 100 PSI I have on all my compressors.

In all a good 'standby compressor' for when others die !

(* So why was it an epic? - I went to collect it in my Disco 2 which would require the rear seats folding down - I got there, pulled the seat release lever and it came off in my hand !! Seller was sympathetic and delivered compressor later that evening. BUT - one my way home my engine cut out. Dead as a nail

I drifted into a muddy lay-by - blooming heavy steering with no engine - engine cranks but not firing. Scratch my head I lifted the bonnet - nothing obvious - cranked again and one or two fires. Left it a minute tried again - fired up and I drove home 7 miles without incident - since then done about 20 miles without incident - very odd.)

Roll out the barrell...then knock off the bands and give it a sanding!

Paint the bands and hammer them back on.

Excessive brush wear .
Try using an air line to blow the grinding dust out the machine and when you use the grinder ensure you don't cover up the air inlet thus reducing hte amount of " Flushing air wash passing through the machine "

Also If you know someone whohas a " growler " get the armatures checked incase you have a faulty shorted windings which will cause arcing & burning of carbon on the brushes .

How noisy are the grinders ? Are the bearings in good condition ? Enough to keep the vibrations of the running machine down .

Taken a fair while to find the right parameter, but a change from a one to a Zero and it now lets you run the thread out. I’m a happy camper today …

What the agents say I should live with on the left, how I got it even though it’s not possible according to them, on the right…

Our company standard is for an undercut all round at the end of a thread - helps stops over enthusiast fitters/maintenance people buggering stuff up by continuing to try to adjust/force things more than intended

Surely if it's the same diameter as the thread root it's no weaker than the thread? And if it's properly radiused.

Fixed, re-made, whatever...
A few years ago I'd put an old HP server PSU into a box and ran my radios from it. Couldn't ever find a reliable source of upping the voltage, as there are so many variations of these things, so pulled it / them (there were two of them) out of service until a couple of weeks ago. I finally found the information I needed, which exactly matched my PSUs, so pulled them off the shelf, plugged them in and... nada, nothing, dead as doorknobs. Likely dried out caps, or somesuch, but I'd lost patience by that point.

Utterly fed up with these, I just bought a decent Tiger PSU and fitted it into the box instead. It's made in China, of course, but there's some hope it's got a reasonable degree of quality control, as they're made for a British company with a decent reputation, as far as I know.

The PSU is now 600W / 50A-ish, instead of the notional 80A of the HP server supplies, but I'm not bothered. I'll not be transmitting on more than two radios simultaneously, and if I do, it will be at low power - digimodes, etc.

Certainly symptoms were indicatiVe of fuel issues. Maybe stop solenoid. I’d filled up for the first time in ages a day before so that might have stirred up something in the tank. That’s the problem with faults that go away, you can never be absolutely sure what happened. I’ll get my Landrover Man to see if anything shows if he plugs it into his OBD thingy.

A friend brought round his petrol strimmer earlier to see if I could get it going as it's been sitting for ages.
Compression, check.
Spark, check.
Petrol, stinks!
So new fuel mixed up and it starts first pull

I'm on a roll so I pull out this old Robin generator that a mate gave me two years ago.

Compression, check.
Spark, check.
Fuel, not flowing.
So a quick carb session found two blocked jets I had to clean with some wire and brake cleaner as I have no carb cleaner,
Bung it back together and it fires up

But after a few minutes it starts cutting out :mad:

I found it was low oil level so topped it up with some SAE30 and it works powing up my 500w oil filled heater

Beer o'clock!

Water in fuel problems confused my Local Citroen dealers , I was self employed and couldn't affort the time out to sort it so hired another car and let them at it . They reckoned they had removed the fuel tank & steamed it clean .

" Boad of Lollocks , the securing screws still had my white Snopake sealant on them . Got the £ 78 plus Vat refunded :laughing:

I took the tank of myself and got a gallon or more of water out , the fuel tank had a raised ridge down the middle . every time I braked firmly some water came over the ridge and was sucked up the suction pipe . All the garage were doing was removing the sender unit & syphoning off the water in the rear shallower compartment .

Eventually months later I found out the local Q8 garage I'd been using for convenience had had numerous excessive water in petrol refills , I was using nearly a tank of juice a day .

SWMBO's Pug 206 fixed.....for now!

The first brand new alternator appeared to have been duff. The local motor factors gave me a second on trust and that worked. Returned the first one earlier today.
