Getting most of the file marks out. Got a few to go. I actually don’t mind them to much, gives the blade a wee bit of character. They have to go though, wife has told me so!

I think for easiness it’ll be wood. G10 or kirinite would be nice but I’m not to confident about shaping the scales, so cheap is better at the moment

If you'd like it I think I have some of the spalted beech left we used for the mantle in the front room, local (D&G) tree if that makes any odds.

It's something like 3" wide, ½" thick and there's maybe a metre and a half of it. It's one of the facing cuts I made to square the main piece up. Happy to get you a picture if you're interested

Well, put all the bits actually on the workbench, all in one place, and maybe, just maybe, I will finally finish this (four years in so far ). Kirinite scales, finished Damascus blade and Nickle Silver for the rivets. Had to order some Araldite though.



Then, because I was in the swing of things, dragged all the waterstones out from under the bench (I keep them all in water in a tupperware container) and set to in the kitchen. One of the paring knives I had to re scale with Kirinite a while back, gained quite a few Brownie Points with that one it is her favourite, and they are decent stuff so come up well.

I do like the kirinite but was concerned I would muck up making the scales. I’ll do wood the first time or two them G10 or Kirinite.

Does anyone know what the new(ish) hardpoint wood saws are made from. I made a knife from one and its crude but its sharp. I wanted to drill a hole but I couldnt drill it even with a really good sheffield drill (my youngest worked for Hydro Tools) that normally go through anything.
As its thin I have a fillet knife in mind...well cut out...yet to finish though

Oh and I glued the handle on the first one just that free glue some of us sent off for....its incredible.....2 part superglue with a minute or two to position before it sets

I’ve always wanted to make a filleting knife. I’ve a few power hacksaw blades of differing thinness, set a side for the round tuit

Think that’s me done removing the file marks. Next stage heat treatment, that be fun. Ordered 3mm brass pins for it and 24hour curing araldite.

I've been wondering this too.
All I found online was one brand (bahco?) that was advertised as C75 spring steel. I don't know if it's different from other saws or if it was just marketing waffle.

Could be C75....its a high carbon Mn steel so is easy to harden.
Ive read that some are hardened all the way through but some are only hardened on the cutting teeth.......so some will be drilled easily
The one ive got cut up is a Bahco and its defintely hardened all across the blade
Ive actually got a few laying about that have gone blunt.
