@Migmac I lucked into a Kobe 4" bench linisher with a 6" sanding disc on the side, on the 'Bay for £60 [ish], which I intend keeping until I can get my 6" wide belt one built [may be a while, since I'm running out of 'raw materials' [aka skip scran ] because of 'lockdown'.....

Perfect timing, I was wondering if a linisher/ belt grinder could be added to some bench grinders. I now know.

a 2" wide belt sander machine is really the dogs danglies for serious knife making. But they are a fairly involved build process in itself and personally I don't have the motivation to build one that may only get used a few times a year, plus I don't have the space to keep one any where. Ive got a 4" wide belt linisher but just didn't get on with that

Another alternative is something like this. I followed the same principle and built one with 3" box section that I can clamp to the bench. If the blank is properly annealed you can have some pretty decent shapes in less than an hour. Ive had some good success with it

Looking good that , Might have to get some tool steel on order now you gave me a bit of inspiration, Actually might have some hardened carbon steel flat bar somewhere in a pile will go fish that out.

That’s a better way of holding the file, better than jubilee clips

Looking good that , Might have to get some tool steel on order now you gave me a bit of inspiration, Actually might have some hardened carbon steel flat bar somewhere in a pile will go fish that out.

Nope, wont get hot enough. Ive got a homemade forge

I have done some aly casting before with a foundry , Blower motor and red hot coals would hope that would be high enough temp.

@Migmac Trying to get the thread back to where it ought to be *cough, cough* , ref my post #41 I checked those 6" diamond discs this morning and they're 240, 600 and 3000 grits - I've only played with the 240 to date - logic dictates the 3k ought to give a super-smooth finish.

Quite chuffed with that got it for scrap steel price weighed in and got a whole length of the stuff.

Wish you guys would stop posting such interesting threads - now I've decided I need to make a knife. What I want is a knife called an Arkansas Toothpick, a double edged fighting knife common in the US in the 19th century. It's to complete my western shooting outfit so doesn't really need to hold an edge as I don't get into fights often but it would be nice if were properly heat treated. I don't have a forge though so are there places I can send the blade to be heat treated?

Have heard of kits where they send you the material you cut, shape grind etc and then send it back for them to heat treat and temper.

Will see if i can find one not much use having heard of them.
