Would it be worth experimenting with a more direct stream of application rather than a misty (atomised) spray?
I think DB showed a plastic container with a metal needle nozzle recently that looked a good idea (plastic nozzles suffer).
As my lathe tends to sit for weeks unused then get used a lot & then resting again i use a straight synthetic cutting oil, Crowncut 810, nice to use & leaves the machine clean & shiny. The same oil is in the tank as when i filled it 5 years ago. At College the other technician filled the tanks with Ilocut, horrible brown tuff that oxidised & left the machines covered in a case of thick brown crud.

I never really have issues with any soluble oil although I prefer some more than others and I much prefer the translucent than the white, especially on the Chiron.
The last stuff I got was fully synthetic from lubetech oils on eBay, can't recall the name but they do not do it anymore for some reason so I have just purchased some Rocol V-Cut SS which is as detailed below.
I always use tap water but then again our tap water up this way is different to the stuff you lads get further South
BTW the Rocol was £90 plus VAT but with the dilution rate they say it should work out pretty economical which is a word I like

Wow, so many informative replies!
I had never considered using distilled water. Seems a little off the wall for something that's circulating over sometimes dirty, sometimes rusty steel and over surfaces out in the open all the time - especially in the cold saw. But it's a cheap experiment and could get me to use up the S/A fluid. Can't say I've noticed anything off/stale about any of it though to be honest.
Perhaps I'll make up two small batches to put on a shelf for lobger term comparison.
I occasionally grab a bottle of "penetrating oil" (~1:1 kero & ATF) but that smokes for fun so is likely neither a good coolant nor good for me. Potentially an issue for all completely oil based things?
Don't have any major issues with gummy deposits, yes they are there but I can cope with that.

Ours doesn't. But is UV'd.
That won't help.
I used to live in a house with water from a spring. UV lamp in the system. Still noticed a build up of mould in the washing machine drawer.
Best add a touch of bleach to inhibit mould unless the fluid already has a biocide.

Could add a spot of sodium hypochlorite into the that should keep any bacteria and mould at bay, I guess you'd need to be careful of the concentration though as it could potentially damage aluminium cooling pump parts if too strong.
They always do. Give mine stir before use.
