I'd really have liked to go in roof but don't think I can. I know nothing of standard panel sizes etc. This is me playing if I put a hip on the back. 11 panels vertical or 12 horizontal. 1035x1688mm panels, 320W.

solar panels and pv panels are permitted developement
but best to check on front solar panels and pv panels as it would change the look of the front of the property
sometimes using other space by say a shed build or portable shed build are the required best angle is worth building if you can as its also permitted development

I think it's always best to spend £150 or so on a visit to the planners and have several drawn up designs & plans with you and ask them " Which one will you be supportive of if I need to put in for planning consent ? ".
Doing it that way saved me 12 or more £ thousands for it was revealed I didn't have a ransom strip between the road edge & my property . It might well save you a lot of dosh and hair pulling too.

Is there a rule of thumb as to how many brackets required for a solar thermal panel?

its down to weight and width of the units whilst spreading the load on the roof as well as wind load
so a 2ft unit would need a bracket every 2ft if used on a rail or fastened direct to the unit
if you want to fit 3 rails you can do as its more support than just a 2 rail system

Just tninking about getting on with the thermal tube install asap. Do I really have to strip off the whole hip and refelt? I'm sure if I was a roofer it'd be a morning's work...I'm not
Thinking to just strip of an area and re-felt that:
Just dug the 3 panels out of "storage", where they got damaged. At first glance 11 of the 36 tubes are knackered:
Hopefully a very nice man is delivering me some unwanted s/hand ones next weekend!
How do you remove these tubes, with the panel laid flat? There's a gasket at the top and a plastic clip at the bottom.

Ta. As I say I have replacement tubes coming next week.
Those plastic cups unscrew/unclip an you can slide the tube out. They normal just have some thermal paste at the top where they enter the manifold.
I would assume you can just slide out some tiles where the brackets need fit. There is now way a solar company would remove the whole roof, in fact they would probably just silde the brackets up under the tiles and poke them through the membrane/felt.

As posted elsewhere thanks to @OJCar for grabbing me this solar thermal pump, controller and expansion tank.
Got my 17 replacement tubes yesterday so I can repair my panels and have 3 up and running. Excess won't be an issue as I'm going to look into a bfo thermal store and use the shaded, north side of the house as a heat dump if required.
In the first instance I'm thinking to use the spare copper cylinder I have as a simple pre heat tank.
Then whether the control kit above is suitable for a 3 panel system...
Was talking to the tube chap yesterday and he reckons with an "FE" tank and getting your levels right, you can avoid having glycol in your system as all the water in the tubes drains back out of the tubes / avoids freezing. Got to get my head round that.
Got to organise some tile brackets, Unistrut, and a scaffold tower(s) to get up to the roof.
The nice man who gave me the tubes is dropping in some surplus, foil covered Rockwool pipe insulation in about 3 weeks.
All systems go hopefully. I reckon though costs will build up on the install to the point I'll be wishing I'd gone PV!

if you have a header tank it means there's no pressure in system, so lower boiling point.... also you need to worry about having an accurate temp sensor on the tubes to turn the pump on - when they're full ow water the temp is pretty steady across the tubes/manifold etc. if they're empty the tube tips can get a lot hotter than the manifold - I don't know how you could measure the tip temperature? (they copper tip sticking out is part of the heat pipe)
