matt glad you understand. hi dave tyrone is a county im not very familiar with,i worked some years ago in dungannon,and our lads were working in coalisland last week. do you work for power screen,thats a name i know,though there is another large company i believe in those parts. are you an apprentice welder? heres a few more.

dnt work for any company, still at school doin a-levels but work for my uncle in the evening, doing general enginering but mostly roof trusses and portal frames for sheds, i do most of th welding these days. terex finlay and fintech and tesab all have large places in co.tryone. i did some work experience for donnell and ellis engineering, (used to be same as donnell and ellis heavy haulage) they made chassis for finlays and crushers for tesab. they are five minutes up the road from me.

Nice job again F/J..........when I see stuff like that it makes me want to get stuck in and weld again. (Sounds kinda sad I know) but I used to love tig rooting pipes, especially in position, can be quite challenging but you get a real sense of satisfaction when you have overcome the difficulties and made a good job!

matt,there,s nothing sad about enjoying welding, as regards doing positional it does sort of lose its appeal, more a chore than an enjoyment. the reality is you need to learn to deal with anything that turns up, but i would recommend any young lad to weld 5 6 and 2g every chance he gets. this spool turned out a little awkward so i did one branch 6g tig root and filler, when i finished i just did the other 5g

I know it's slightly cheeky to ask but any chance you could give us a few of your parameters with your pics? Rod type, brand, size, amps etc. I'm trying to use my MMA kit a bit more rather than just use the mig and it's nice to have something to work towards, like welds as nice as yours

Hey Wozzaaaah, if I remember I will take a couple of pics of an exemplar pipe weld I did a while back, basically saves me having to demo various point of completing a full run around 4" pipe, a view of the desired root pene, grind back of the face side of root and, cap. Parameters I use too, including rod spec. But root face prep and gap may not suit you, this is mainly down to the individuels preference, to a degree.

Maybe a wee reality check is required here matt! Todays efforts. Demo 6g on 2" pipe, O&A process (I hate O&A) flameproof ovvies, krommer, bandana to increase longevity of a new shirt if popping occurs. prep pipe, tack together, position pipe and check angle for 45. No 7 nozzle, 6>12 root the pipe, arms are sore. No 5 nozzle, btm stringer cap 6>12, arms are sore, beginning to sweat a little! Top stringer and final cap run 6>12 twice of course for all of the runs. Arms are sore, sweat running down towards the cheeks of my whatzit, you still want to get stuck in!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If so, I can recommend a good couch

Up until 9 yrs ago I used to be a coded welder for Babcocks, on Powerstations/Nuclear/Pharmaceutical/Petrochem/ Semi Conductor etc, so I have a fair idea of whats involved
I just sometimes miss getting 'stuck' into a nice tig root and mma fill & cap.........I know that the novelty value wouldn't last more than 1 pipe, before I remembered why I got off the tools in the first place

Nice one Runnach! It would be good to just set the machine up using similar parameters and see what the result is. I doubt I'd be the only one to try too jusdging by the amount of interest this thread has generated

Not all Sales reps sleep in layby's for most of the working day...................oh ok, you got me, we do!
I never had the pleasure of Cockenzie, worst job I had was after I left Babcocks, I ended up at a local fabricators and they had subbed out some structural fab work to another company and then sent the finished job straight out too site in Norway. Few weeks later they got a call from Hydra saying that the welding was cack, it turned out this sub fabricator had welded all of the structural stuff with vertical down mig so it was all weak as ****.
My company had to send out a team of welders and fabricators over to go and fit some strengthening gussets all over the place.....all MMA work, 100 ft up in the air, next to a huge Fyord, with about -6 degrees wind blasting at you all day. It was in winter time, so they hardly got any sunlight, the hotel was in the middle of nowhere and the beer was about £8 a glass
It was horrible, I hated every minute of it.bigdavesproule
