Bit more info,
The audi repair shop guys say I need a cebora double pulse mig for this job,
The units are pretty high spec with cold start hot start, crater fill and so on.
However, it sounds like the only reason you need one is because you download the welding parmiters to it and that makes sure you are welding to the audi spec.
I have got a single pulse mig and we will see if we can find out what the actual settings are.

Why should you need to do the repair to Audi's exact spec down to a specific model of welder if the motor is out of warranty and not subject to a recall? It's not like they have to guarantee the repair or anything since the clearly don't warranty the original flaw.

If it's your own car you can do whatever you like, the guy that is asking me about this one is asking me what I can repair it for.
If I'm doing it for somebody else it will need to be done following some sort of standard so the audi method would be the place to start for the quote..

Fair enough about following a standard but if you have the metal properties can you not just follow standard procedures & methodology for those materials rather than an actual procedure laid down by Audi? It's not like they got it right first time round.

Problem with this car is that it has been into Audi who have recorded it on the computer system as having the problem and what repair work it needs.
The owner doesn't want to pay the quoted price for audi to fix it but is worring about resale value if he has a back street repair job done so it's finding a happy medium on the repair.
I think he thinks the car is worth more than it is but that's something else we are discussing!

I was amused as he seemed to be anchoring the puller to the stand underneath. Surely not, I thought. Then at the end, when he released the tension, the car jumped, just as if he'd anchored it to something he really shouldn't have done. I suspect there was a race between fixing it and it falling over.
I'm not commenting on the welding, but for what it's worth I don't have a very high opinion of the original suspension bracket. It seems shonky as hell.

I’m absolutely gobsmacked Audi charge £20k for that repair! 
I’m not surprised people baulk at paying it and look for cheaper options but a 3rd party repair must have a serious impact on saleability and value?
If I was looking for one I’d want one with an impeccable record unless it was ridiculously cheap and I could see it had been done well.
At least it’s easy to spot.

Seem to remmber something about the 3 series BMWs cracking the body where the rear subframe mounted, more common on the higher torque models like the M3 and BMW wanting something like 5k for an official repair.
Symptom was a clicking noise from the rear end under acceleration, otherwise quite tricky to spot it.

Iirc, they did the repairs FOC, as long as the car hadn't been altered from standard in any way.
I agree with you chaps, like many other folk, I really liked that car when it first came out, not that I could ever afford to buy one, well maybe when one is 20 years old but the cost of parts would still be crippling no doubt.
I wouldn't touch one now anyhow, bad design from the start if you ask me.
Only for a certain amount of time.
Had a mate who bought a big standard e46 m3 and found it cracking. And got stung as it was outside of the allotted time for the repair.
Had to repair and strengthen it out of his own pocket. Wasnt happy about it but was able to do it fairly easily.
How many original owners will ever have them replaced? I would bet that would be none of them. If you can afford a car like that you aren't going to keep it for 80K miles.

They will have owned them and moved on to teslas
On the up a quick google now says brakes are £10k so a great saving for the owners
