I welsome it personally, they've finally wised up to the fact that the paper discs are un-necessary, and you can now pay monthly too, which makes budgeting much easier. If I buy a D3, I'll be looking at a £400 tax bracket vehicle, and being able to put that on a monthly payment will be much better for me. Yes, we'll lose out slightly by selling a car mid-month, but most people will become wise to that and try and sell at the end of a month which may be nice, and then sorn it if possible.

It has it's ups and downs I guess, but I think the flexability is a bonus.

Read in the paper this morning that the DVLA have run out of perforated tax discs and are sending them out on plain unperforated paper (scissors not included!) although Post Offices still have supplies of perforated discs.

Yep, I don't know how that will be handled, I guess in theory it's taxed until they are notified of change of keeper, at which point I guess maybe it will ask for an email address? I have to say that's one area that seems to be very poorly thought out.

Actually I've worked it out, you'll just need the V5C number which should be on all the bits of paper, you can then hop online and tax it from your phone or maybe the car dealer will be friendly and assist, and then away you go.

I got one a week ago and it's perforated, I wonder if the unperforated ones will become collectors items? a bit like some of the misprinted or unperforated stamps that collectors prize.

My missus was trying to get me to buy her a Minion shaped on when we bought the Focus earlier this year. I told her to wait till October, they'll be on offer then.

But you missed my point if you insure it and it doesn't appear on the mid database straight away you won't be able to tax because it will show as uninsured to the tax system

My tax disc holder is currently held to the screen by one of those demister pads wedged between it and the dash so at least I don't have to bother getting another.

with no tax disc from 1st oct the penalty of failure to display a current tax disc should go as well, but will you be done for showing an out of date one????????

... though it makes it easier for HM Thieves to put the tax up in a way that makes people say "Ah well, it's only a fiver a month" whereas if they said it was going up £60 a year, people would be up in arms

If ANPR flags you as having no tax or insurance the police will check by phone before taking any action.

sure you can get insured for it but your insurance doesnt appear on the mid database straight away it can sometimes be days so there is no way of taxing it,

They dont check the insurance any more. Stopped it a while back.

I reckon this is the first stage of abolishing VED altogether. The savings on administration / DVLA would be immense. Of course there would be an alternative and that could be an extra duty added to fuel.

They do it's checked electronically against the mid data base no insurance no tax same as mot

It's the Post Office that don't require the certificate, as Snooper says it's checked online.

chap from dvla on radio today saying " we have 10 cars to read licence plates to see if your is taxed or not, besides the police traffic having equipment in the cars" then he was asked "how do you stop car cloning which will be easier without tax disc" looooooooooooooooong silence then an answer of we have to talk to the plate makers.
a listener comes on and basically say`s ( this part had me pmsl) you can check on the web as to how long a vehicle has for mot and ins so you`ve made it easier now to run round in a clone car as you don`t need a disc to display.

Don't the average-speed cameras on motorways read number plates? They could easily be used for checking tax, insurance and MOT. To some extent a network of ANPR cameras could check for clones, if a car shows up in London and Glasgow within 20 mins then one of them's a clone.
