Hi all. Newbie member and just want to say thanks for all the great information on here. I've been reading a lot about new welder purchase options but seem to be confusing myself as to my options. I'm a DIYer who used to look after a vw camper so have a SIP 130 Migmate Turbo and a Cosmo 100 stick machine. I reckon both are over 15 yrs maybe even 20. I abandoned gas welding on the mig years ago as could not afford bottle hire so have worked only using flux core and have hated it. I know that flux core is functional and achieves most of my basic needs (I do some light fabrication related to my small foundry and forge and decorative projects etc but I know I am personally capable of producing better welds than flux core allows. I'm tempted just to dump the old lumps and go with a 3 in one cos I'd love to practice on tig too but I'm also conscious that gas hire is now much cheaper for the diyer and a new wire drive wheel and putting in an independent 24V PSU for the wire drive motor and beefing up my tired old leads might make such a pleasant improvement for say 100 quid as opposed to my absolutely max budget (400 would create domestic tension) for a new 3 in 1 or IGBT MIG/Stick combo. All the posts I have read have been really useful and informative and provide different perspectives but I'm struggling to decide. As an aside I'm interested in refurbing an old boat trailer and including aluminium in place of steel so aluminium welding via AC mig is also a consideration for my usage.
Cheers. Look forward to hearing from you
