Yes. I think that's effectively what I have done too. I kept a 1980 vw camper on the road for 10 years with it and have done many small projects but would not entertain the cost of disposables except on one or two occasions. I'm not saying I couldn't have done better but the invisibility of the pool and the level of spatter plus the genuine vagaries of wire drive took the fun out improving as many others have referred to I think. Also....when you are a hobby welder there is a limit to the amount of time and money you can put into practicing. In fact, if you turn it on it's head I may well have achieved quite a lot considering how problematic it has been. So I am now looking forward to a new blackline inverter but I take your point thanks.I managed for 20 plus years with a Migmate turbo using flux core and even aluminium welding with small bottles of argon - practise makes, if not perfect, at least better
I treated myself to a GYS MIG a few years ago - a bit more than your budget, but it makes welding a lot easier - so instead of going for the cheap welder you can afford today, I'd be saving up a touch so you can get something that really is an improvement on what you have at the moment.
With the GYS I got in contact with the local area rep via their website, who sorted me with a good price via the nearest local supplier - it was rather less than I had seen anywhere on the net by a considerable margin.
Cheers
Jim
