That's what I was thinking, and sounds like the ignition system could be misfiringBy the sounds of it, last time it was right was before the replacement flex plate.
I have, in the last 2 weeks:
- changed all the spark plugs
- checked that the spark plug leads are connected correctly
- confirmed I am getting a spark
I've checked the waveforms to the input of the GEMS for both the camshaft and crankshaft sensors and they are both fine.
The fuel pressure after ignition switch on is 41psi (35psi is quoted in the RAVE), it has never run long enough for me to see what it does after that!
Check the valve clearances as one of the links I read reckons if the valve clearances are too tight then you can get backfire through the intake
He has also had good results from compression testClearances should be OK unless there's a problem with the hydraulic lifters
