This is a 1995 P38 4.6 V8, I know we have some tyre kickers :-) on here and I'm running out of ideas, so any suggestions would be appreciated.
I bought this over a year ago as a non-runner (actually a runner that sounded like a bag of spanners to be accurate). I hoped it might be the flex plate (and indeed it turned out to be the case) so with the flex plate replaced and all back together, I started it confidently expecting a quiet running engine.
(I should add that according to the seller, all was fine with it until it started making the horrible noise.)
If only!
If it starts at all it will backfire, it never gets above 1500 rpm and wont run longer than 15 seconds (normally about 5-10 seconds).
In replacing the flex plate (and in fact all the time it has sat at the house) I haven't touched anything to do with the engine.
I have, in the last 2 weeks:
Any suggestions?
Cheers
Peter

I have, in the last 2 weeks:
- changed the crankshaft sensor
- changed all the spark plugs
- checked that the spark plug leads are connected correctly
- confirmed I am getting a spark
- checked compression, all around 160psi
- checked the pulse from the crankshaft and camshaft sensors
- removed sensors in turn (e.g. MF, O2 etc.) and there has been no change
- the diagnostics device (Nanocom) reports no faults with the engine ECU
- confirmed the fuel rail is pressurised quickly (approx 41psi) after 2s
- removed, cleaned and replaced all connectors to various sensors.
Any suggestions?
Cheers
Peter
