You can buy a noid light test kit for about twenty quid on flea bay or make something Peter. Also Mr fuzzy made a good point above about checking for a colasped cat / exhaust. If it's not fully blocked it will run usually to a limited rpm and maybe backfire.

Have you tried fresh fuel, if it has been standing for a year or so?

I originally tested a 8 of mine, remove spark plug wires to stop engine firing. unclip the electrical connector on the injector , push two thin wires in the elec connector , attach them to a volt meter set on a low scale, and crank the engine, I`m sure the volts should be 3 volts. Doesnt guarantee the injector is activating when its coil is energised and allowing the petrol in. but does confirm contiuity.
When I attacked mine!!!! released mine---- Remove Injector,i had a pressurised container set to 35 psi full of petrol attached to the injector, two batteries to supply 3 volts, the injector got a canny few bangs on a piece of wood to help it release, and the petrol should squirt through with a nice mist., I let plenty run through.
But as I said before the engine had stood for a considerable time, been rebuilt etc etc, and then attempt to start, timing, plugs, distributer in out in out umpteen times, rotar arm leads plugs, ignition -- all the EFI diagnostic checks, wiring harness checked double checked umpteen times,the Rover forum, local Garages and friends all throwing their input together with collegues on the NSRA and Rods and Sods forums. In the end It was a simple as stuck injectors with the electro magnetic coil activating but the plunger nozzle thing was stuck inside the injector. .
Thats the price of being a Joiner and not a Mechaninc!!!!!!!!!!!!!

fuel was suspect as it was left over from the Lawnmower and possibly a bit dead, something I dont realy know, I do know the lawnmower dont like old petrol after the winter standing idle.

My 95 rangie had a similar issue, I also purchased it as a non runner.
I believe you may have checked this already but.
The sensor that "reads" the flywheel, it's bolted up to the block behind and below the n/s head kept moving and I had to get the pieces that the sensor bolts to welded in position. Because of the misfire it had also destroyed the cat as well.

When it is running does the front exhaust section get excessively hot ( glowing) ?

Bridge the fuel pump relay and observe fuel rail pressure as the engine dies.

It doesn't run long enough to get tepid, let alone hot/glowing!

You need to work at it from the "why won't it continue to run?" angle?

Hardest thing for an engine in poor shape to do is start from cold - low revs, low compression, low voltages from (inductive) sensors, low battery voltage during cranking, its all against it.
So once its running, its over the worst, so what changes and makes it die.

Another depressing evening! I put 2 gallons of fresh fuel in, it had no effect. In fact it's almost even worse as it's firing even less now.

I pulled a couple of plugs, both were wet (so there is [some] fuel getting through) and both gave a good spark. I've previously checked the compression and that was around 160psi per cylinder.

Last night we removed, tested and replaced the crankshaft sensor, so it should be getting a good timing signal.

It's still popping and banging, but not even running now.

Not quite sure where to go next!

rangerover being a twerp for no apparent reason

change relays, chances are it's one of them. iirc the relay that powers the fuel pump / lambdas and hotwire maf is all done by the same one. then the main ecu relay change those two and might find it's a completly diffrent animal.


just because you have volts dont think the relays are good, normaly see full volts when its not running

on rover v8's the injectors are also crap

Not 100% tbh sometimes the honeycomb literally collapses and blocks flow, have heard of someone who found either rodents or birds had been trying to build a nest in the back box....

Not sure if running a hose through it would do any damage?

Washed out a CAT two days ago. Fairly regular occurance, usually on diesel engines. I am not familiar with the RR but I would just drop the exhaust first to let it breathe (if that's the problem) if it improves it, then I would put the time in to actually check the CAT. Something that old is likely to have a lot of rusty bolts.

Thought that you might like to know that 2 gallons of GreenApple's finest (our local petrol station) had no effect. To cap it all the BeCM (what controls most of teh body electrics) has gone on selective strike and I can no longer raise the driver's window! Now it barely starts as well!

Sounds stupid but has it got a decent battery on it?
My boss had problems with his rangerover tdi hot starting, the local specialist replaced injectors and low pressure pump, fault was still occurring, they diagnosed it as high pressure pump(high price so he left it), replaced battery because it died, since then he's had no problems with starting.

Yes, battery is good. I tried swapping batteries and the car gave me a "Keycode Lockout" for my trouble and it took me 2 days to get back in and crank again as it disabled the engine as well!

I know you're looking for a diy solution but there's a chap in Shaw who is very cheap and very good.
We use him for our Disco and what he doesn't know isn't worth knowing.
