It's just a bit of fun. My lad is doing apple pen holders too, to place on the tables. This one in green PETG but he has a roll off red/green mix PLA coming:

The plan is one of these pen holders on each table. Lad's done a woodgrain PLA one too that I've just given a mahogany stain and will spray lacquer. That can sit on the bar. Then a stack of the Sip 'N Tick cards.

Today I cut an A5 size piece of aluminium sheet, de-burred the edges, coarse emery cloth to key then rollered some 2-pack etch primer on. Sat curing atop the boiler now. This will be primed both sides and I'll make a little timber frame for it.
The stabby child here will paint it exactly as the big sign and we'll use it as a test bed for the top "sealing" coats. First off will be some aerosol acrylic to hopefully seal the acrylic paint and white gloss background, hopefully it won't run.
Once sealed we'll investigate a resin. Moving away from epoxy and thinking 2-pack acrylic or 2-pack polyurethane a few mm thick.

Next step, when the new sign is painted, is to get it into the original surround. It's made from 4 pieces bolted together with 2 M8 bolts each side.
The new sign is 1/4" smaller all round than the inside of the surround. It's meant to be screwed through from the sides with countersunk screws but some are real close to the edge. We'll take up the 1/4" with some 3D printed spacers.
On top there's a couple of swinging lugs with M12 bolts sticking up.
This surround fits into a frame affixed atop a wooden post (telegraph pole?). Crap picture below off the web, I'll get a better one tomorrow. The old sign is down and hedge cut back a bit now:
We'll use ladders to give the frame a quick wire brushing and a couple of coats of Lidl's finest black paint.
Gettng the new sign up will be fun.

Someone elsewhere said they hoped we'll be keeping the obligatory pub sign squeak!
Joking aside there have been a number of signs here over the years. Mostly done by locals including some very good amateur artists. None have lasted. The pub sits on top of the North Downs so sees some pretty severe weather.
I presume it just hangs off the two top bolts and just swings in the breeze. Not that I want to but I shall have to pay a visit when they open on Thursday and ask the question.
If I do go the 2K acrylic lacquer route, I wonder if the one of these I have would manage the job?

Before we fit the new pub sign we've got to get up and sort the old frame out as aforementioned. Some better shots below.

Daughter chucked some acrylic colour atop the white gloss base on the test piece of aluminium.
The brown smudge on the left is the underlying etch primer. Be interesting to see any reaction there.
If it ever stops raining I'll knock up a little frame for the sample so we can experiment with the acrylic lacquer to see if it lifts the design and also polyurethane resin.

Previous signs up there have apparently been yacht varnished but non have lasted. Maybe the substrate flexed and gave up. It'll likely be a 2-pack polyurethane that goes on.
The name, I tried joining FB with it. Within 24hrs I'd been banned on the grounds it had "racist overtones" or something! Then tried Dwayne Pipe and that was "excessively flippant" or some such.

Hmm...daughter gave the sample sign a very light coat of the acrylic lacquer, almost a dusting. It didn't seem to react. She then forgot and left it out overnight. The next evening I gave it as thicker spray coat and brought it indoors. Seemed OK to start with. However when we next looked it seems to have had the type of typical reaction you don't want. Mainly on the white gloss but also a little on the acrylic colours.

The BiL does car spraying and is well versed. At 70 he's seen/worked with most paint types. Reckons we're onto a loser with this sign and that we should take it all off and start again with one type. Daughter's autistic so that won't go down too well. Basically she has to follow this through to it's logical conclusion even if it's a fail. Only at that point will she do it again.
The BiL said that you can sometimes find a coat of whatever will go on fine, like the first spray coat of acrylic lacquer did but subsequent coats of the the same (lacquer), will see it lift off.
