That's both sides of the sign done anyway. I'm going to sand the edges and probably give 3 coats of Bedec Barn Paint. Small madam will mask up and paint the inside edges of the frame.

Have it swinging as a traditional pub sign , there is a lot of surface area to have strong winds & gusts push on it ....... likely to snap the pole or sign or both .

It is a swinger!

A couple of big pivot bolts at the top. There's a nominal 1/4" all round between the outside of the wooden sign frame and inside of the old iron frame.

I need to drill a few more holes in the old frame so all the "screws" hit dead centre of the frame. At the moment some holes in the frame would put the screws right on the sign edge.

Both sides have had their first coat of 2-pack pu today. It's gone on well. Dries better than here where it's just gone on, crystal clear in fact. The gloss really brings it to life.

Lad is printing up some black PETG spacers now to go between frame and sign.

I've ordered M6 timber inserts in stainless just now. Saying that I might just use a stack of stainless wood screws around the periphery. Not sure which way to go...

Pretty much ready to fit into the original frame. The edges are all drilled to suit the frame holes. Lad's just printing the PETG spacers. Going with M6x80 A2 woodscrews into 4.5mm holes. Plan is a nom gap between the wooden sign and original frame to keep it from trapping damp. The frame is aforementioned, phenolic resin ply. The outer edge of the sign is the "glossy" back of the ply. That's had a coat of Bedec Barn Paint. God know if it'll stay on there though I did sand it with 60 grit paper to roughen it up. It

The frame's been rubbed down and cleaned, the holes opened up and etch primed. One coat of black bitumen so far. New stainless bolts all round. The steel was incredibly hard to drill even with Cobalt bits!

I died down the original, rusty M12 fixing studs, applied anti seize and new nuts and washers.

As an aside I had some slightly out of date black silicone, scored from work, Dow 791 and really good stuff. November 22 was the date but it seems to have gone off OK.

I've now run a bead all round inside where the sign meets the ply frame and tooled it off with my Fugi Cramer kit.

We already did! Sat there with a pint of British Bulldog each when we'd finished and the kids a Coke & lemonade. My daughter who painted it was made up.

What a pig to fit though. The scrolly frame is bent like a parallelogram. The sign is dead square. I had to remove 3 out of 8 M8 bolts as the heads were catching. The top bolt centres were out to the holes by 3/4". The lad with the tractor grabbed a scaffold pole and trolley jack and we jacked the corner of the frame up to try and square things up. It sort of worked. I had to pop back home to grab some more nuts, washers and a length of M12 stud. A return visit is required to touch up a few bits and fit 3 countersunk bolts in place of those removed.

Had to go up again tonight just to make sure the sign was still up.

Bloody family came with me! So much for me spending the evening, just me, Scott Mariani and a few pints.

I say 25 - 30 as I stopped counting after about 20. Made myself busy with 6 pints of Spirit Of Kent and 3 lamb roast baps with new potatoes.

That's brilliant and is bound to have done wonders for her self confidence and self belief in the skills and talent that she's got.

You should both be rightly proud of the outcome from this little project, which will hopefully swing there in wind for many years to come and bring a little "I did that" smile to your faces every time you pass by.

In an ideal world the scrolled frame should have been taken down and shot blasted then zinc flame sprayed or galvanised after squaring up.
