Poor MPG

Its quite a surprise how much more to the gallon you get by driving slow, last trip back from Wales the roads were busy and I dont think I did more than 50mph most of the way, used about half of what I normally use on that run.

When fuel.prices peaked last year, i stuck the D3 at 60 on cruise control on the A30/M5/M4/M25 run from the southwest to London. I was getting in excess of 36mpg. That sounds poor but if I hoof it around I can lose 10mpg on that easily somisnvery good for me in this car.

I was walking home from the pub thinking about this earlier. I've allways hated diesels, never believed Tony Blair when he told us they were cleaner, had a diesel Astra company car which I never liked, the Astra 1.7 diesel van I had before that did 26 mpg...
So my philosophy is, if I can afford to ignore the lower mpg, and enjoy the smoothness, quiet, easier servicing from a petrol engine, that's what I'll drive. Each to his own!

Never really had much to do with Hilux's other than blowing them out from under the Taliban.... acceleration was quite good at that point.

This car can go down to an indicated 4.5mpg on certain cold town trips / traffic to Tesco etc. Never goes above about 15mpg on long trips. There is no replacement for displacement though.

The Jag 5L V8 supercharged XFR-S I had for a while did 18mpg everywhere - not bad I thought for 535bhp and I used every ounce of it all the time

I had an Xf twin turbo 3L diesel. Very quick and pretty good on fuel - smooth and refined. Funnily enough the way I drive I NEVER get trouble with DPFs

My Sprinter only gets 16-22mpg, it drinks. It's so bad on fuel that with a loaded trailer it barely gets any worse.

Same with my old S3 LWB Safari - 16mpg on average, towing a cow box made no difference to it.
I'm frankly a bit shocked at the crap economy figures from new-ish cars mentioned on here.
Hell, thirty years ago I could wring 35mpg out of a Scim, on a run.

Few years back we had a L reg Renault 1.9 turbo diesel, and it did 10 miles to the litre no matter how you drove it, so if you had done 400 mile it would take 40 litres, after a few months I stopped checking it as it never changed.

Regarding modern cars mpg I think they are all crap, a loaded 44 ton truck can get 10 mpg, so a car should be kissing 100mpg.
I remember when the daf euro6 510 models came out and I asked the driver how was the mpg? and he replied 10mpg and we run loaded all the time, this was back in 2014.

Yeah, I've read that before about supertankers and container ships. By far the cheapest and greenest way to move things around when you calculate mpg/per ton of cargo.

I watched a documentary done on a British warship, while it was refuelling they asked the captain about fuel economy, at full speed it did 17 yards to the gallon!.

Fully agree - however, diesels, especially EU5+ suffer badly with short, low temperature, commuting type journeys - even though it may cost more in fuel (but ultimately less in TCO) I'd personally always recommend a petrol vehicle for commuters/school runs/pension & shop type usage

0.03 litres per mile per container. This is based on the Emma Maersk which can carry 15,000 containers.
A lorry uses 4.54 litres per mile. Now these figures are based on 20ft containers but most are 40ft. So given a lorry can carry 2x 20ft we have 2.27 litres per mile.
Summing up a container ship is 75x more efficient than a lorry. Not bad! Equivalent to a lorry doing 750mpg

I have seen this on a chart as well - "economy by scale"

Big stuff is good on fuel - when you work out the weight it is moving - shipping is unreal economy wise (water has less resistance/friction).

40ton artic will do >10+mpg on a good day - 1.5ton diesel car looks good at 50mpg.

Note to enthusiastic mpg watchers; I used to measure my mpg. In the car I had, a 2000ish 2l diesel 3series, it hovered around mid 40s. Could get up to 50 on a decent run and approach 1000mi on a tank on an extremely favourable go. However, the OBC was way out. Generally reading 60-70mpg. I've no idea if this was just my car, typical for the model or common on lots of cars. But since then, rarely trust an obc indication as anything other than a relative indicator

Not being argumentative but are you sure that's correct? 4.54 litres is just short of a gallon (0.998) so that's 1 MPG.

I may well be wrong but I thought an HGV did better than that (closer to 10mpg on a good day). Which would put the HGV at 0.227 miles per litre per container?

Good lorry with a good driver on a good run on a good day - is just below 10mpg on average.

8 wheelers tipping can't do this - but a big artic wagon on a good run - amazing really when you think your car is doing high MPG.
