Au Contraire Rodney, a 747 is very inefficient by modern standards, that’s why they are predominantly cargo aircraft nowadays apart from a few carriers who still use them for passengers.I would expect, as usual, they would carefully cherry-pick that statistic.Air resistance is far less at 7 miles high, level flight is not so bad and the seats are not always full, of course. They don’t like to, but there will be a percentage of empty, without passengers - or with very few (I did notice the claim was ‘seats’ not ‘passengers’). They also selected their most efficient ‘plane, too?
An Airbus 320 with a 95% load factor which is about average will achieve around 147 mpg per seat, and the new NEO with very high bypass engines can improve on that by over 25%
