Phase 3 colours help pls

You must be a youngster, it was red, white and blue for the phase colours.

But you are just creating "ghost" phases with capacitors. At that point the motor isn't running on 1 phase.

That's like saying "you can run that 3ph motor on single ph, by using an inverter" but you're not really as you are creating 3 ph.

Well sorry but there are not loads of three ph motors running on single, not without adaption etc
a dual voltage motor is 220/240 3ph and 440 3ph but are still three phases
star and delta are ways of wiring 3ph
and if you dont know that, you shouldnt be advising IMO.

well now who is going to look silly after writing that.
you need to go look around and find out what your talking about before putting people down.
there are loads of people running 440 volt 3 phase motors on 240 volts single phase.
check some of these out if you don't understand how to do it.

that's just 1 bloke.
check out you tube and you can find hundreds of them doing it.

yes just with capacitors to alter the phase angle same as in a static converter but its not true 3 phase and they do not put full power out on second and 3d phase ity gets u by though

i used to wire a cap onto them but you had to push start the motor in what direction you needed...once running they were fine.

if the rest of the drill was in such a bad state you can bet the motor is totally f*****d as well.
£129 was plenty for it, obviously a machine that was just chucked out for scrap and sold on ebay to anyone who will buy it.
did they charge you postage or deliver it themselves in the horsebox ?
I take it you have replaced the gears in the drill with new gears ? checked and cleaned out all the bearings.
measured if the quill is dead straight etc ?
when you get a new motor for it find the bloke with a grand show him it run and snatch that grand very fast and run away.

Well I will leave that to the people that know about 3ph to answer that question in their own minds, because clearly you dont have that knowledge and you seem to have answered your own question quite nicely

I do look 'round' my friend and I do know what I am talking about, as I have done all these adaptions several times and more than just motors , to get 3ph to work on single ph and is not something that is to be done without a GOOD knowledge of phase angles etc.
I am not putting any one down, it is plain that your knowledge in this matter is limited, therefore you advising a person with even less knowledge, is questionable and they need to be warned so as to be aware of the dangers.

Bit harsh surely. We've all bought things and sometimes paid over the odds for what we've got. I do it all the time with brand new gear expecting x company's thing will be better quality because it is more expensive but usually finding it isn't the case.

The drill might be one of those tools thats had little actual work but little love either. I don't know what the op wants in a pillar drill but if he's just after banging some holes int steel then even a worn pillar will better a pistol drill for long holes.

obviously the bloke don't know much about them or would not have asked the questions he has.
and to refuse such a profit would not be best for him.

for £1,000 he could buy a drill that would last him a lifetime that is in perfect condition and would suit his needs.

to get this one running right he is going to have to fork out more than he has paid for it already, or be extremely lucky and
find a perfect 240 volt motor for very little money !!!

its not knocking him, its just common sense to get shot of what could turn into a money pit.

do not buy a secondhand car just because the engine sounds ok if the body work is crap.

thanks for the advice but ive worked on more cars then ive had hot dinners, I started my working life at a ford main dealer many moons ago

and yes we do all get done at some time, but if we get half a chance of redeeming ourself we do, and to get such a huge profit that's a chance in a million.

ford main dealer !!!! now that you really should never of wrote down, its asking for a proper drilling.
never met a decent mechanic who worked at fords.
pretty sure uk ford never had a good one on their books.
